3 Things You Should Know about CBD for Dogs

CBD oil for dogs

If you’ve ever used CBD oil and you’re a dog owner, you might wonder if your fur baby can benefit from it too. But before you go and give them human cannabidiol (CBD) oil, here’s the scoop – pet CBD products are different and properly formulated for animals. So, it’s best to give them that specific type because it’s way easier to determine the dosage for the desired effect. In other words, it’s the safer choice for them than the human kind. But, hang on, here’s what you need about CBD oil for dogs before giving the first dose.

1. Uses of CBD Oil for Dogs

Just as you might use the human form for relief from certain ailments, your pet too can enjoy benefits. More research is being done on CBD use for pets, as an alternative to using pharmaceutical drugs that may have side effects. For pain relief, in particular, many owners are looking for natural healing alternatives.

Interestingly, the products work the same way as for humans as dogs because we have the same endogenous cannabinoid system. To simplify what happens, cannabidiol interacts with certain receptors in the brain… It’s important to note here that CBD is NOT psychoactive but instead can offer calm and pain-relief effects.

As some hemp oils work moderately while others are more effective, it’s best to look for high-quality formulations and ones specifically for the size of your pup to ensure the safest dosage that delivers the results you’re looking for.

The most common uses of CBD oil for dogs are to treat:

  • Chronic pain (such as joint pain)
  • Inflammation
  • Anxiety
  • Nausea
  • Digestive problems
  • Seizures
  • Sensitive skin issues

Some people also give the oils to their doggies to encourage healthy aging. Other owners administer it for cancer-related reasons, although the research is not conclusive about its benefits in this area.  We’re sure more scientific studies will be happening in the coming years to provide more in-depth info on the uses and gains of using CBD oil for dogs.

2. Side Effects of CBD Hemp Oils

It’s also important to note that CBD oils may have side effects for dogs, including:

  • Tiredness
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Dry mouth

As you can see these side effects are uncomfortable but not life-threatening. There are no reports to date of pets overdosing from CBD and reports to date indicate it is safe for pets. Furthermore, your pet won’t get high on this type of product because it has cannabidiol, which is not psychoactive, and it’s not habit-forming. That’s because you’ll make sure the dog treats you give your loved one does NOT have any THC in it.

For example, when it’s given to reduce anxiety, the hemp oil may make your fur child very tired in addition to calming them. This statement is particularly true if it’s a big dose. So, it’s best to watch them to ensure they are in a safe place when lying down, ideally within the home.

Another minor result is a drop in your dog’s blood pressure. It is temporary, and the decline is small, but we want to mention it as doggie may feel lightheaded for a very short time. Again, keep an eye on your pet to ensure they don’t trip or fall.

Lastly, dry mouth can result when CBD reduces the production of saliva in your pup’s mouth. As a result, you’ll notice that your dog is extra thirsty. Therefore keep the water bowl topped up, so they get relief whenever they need it.

3. Examples of CBD Pet Treats and Snacks

By now you are likely wondering what CBD oil for dogs looks like in package form. There are many different formulations with cannabidiol. For convenience, the oil is available in bottles so that you can easily add drops to the animal’s food, a favorite treat, or water dish. There are specific ones for different sizes of dog, such as small and medium, so choose appropriately.

Another way that CBD is available is in treat or snack packs. Soft and chewable CBD Pet Treats are often easier for your pup to consume than oversized pills. Plus, they come in yummy flavors and bite-size pieces that are more appetizing than most medicines. So, it’s not a chore trying to get your fur pal to have the snack to get the benefits of CBD, such as pain relief.

Some popular CBD dog snacks are:

  • Jerkey sticks
  • Salmon bites
  • Beef treats
  • Chicken biscuits

In addition to treats and oils, CBD also comes as powders, ointments, and capsules. Before trying the CBD product for the first time, always check with your dog’s vet to make sure you have their approval.

How to Choose CBD for Dogs

When it comes to uses of CBD oil or another pup hemp product, likely there’ll be some trial and error to find which one your doggie likes the best. You might also decide to up or lower the dose depending on your dog’s size and the situation. While it might take time to get the right dose, it’s worth it to help this lovable animal that’s part of your family.

You also won’t necessarily want to go with the cheapest options out there. Not all CBD oils for dogs are made with the same quality; as with most things, you’ll get what you pay for. A higher price usually means a higher quality of the product.

Lastly, always read the instructions on the package to make sure you give the proper dose to your pet. And here’s a few tips on what to look for when buying treats or CBD oils for dogs. Firstly, always look for 100% natural products as they don’t contain pesticides and more. That can take away from the purity and potency of the product, which will diminish its effects.

Additive-free recipes are the best too because they’re the most potent ones. Thus, you’re more likely to get the desired effect for your pet. Choosing quality products is always the right, just as you would when taking CBD yourself.

Final Words on Dogs and CBD

Choosing natural, non-toxic formulations to give your dog is the best, hands down. Then you can feel good that you’re helping relieve their ailments using quality formulations. What’s more, you won’t get potentially harmful effects like with traditional medications.

With CBD getting more and more popular, be aware of the brand you are buying. I’ve seen a News clip where they tested some products, where they advertise on the bottle 500mg but it had only 200mg. Do some research about the company before you purchase their product.

  2. It looks like I’m going to need to order some of this for my sweet Vinny. He has dry skin and it sounds like CBD oil can really help. ;) Well-written and timely, my friend. Thank you!!
