It’s no secret that building a good morning routine can set the tone for our day. It allows us to look at each day with a new perspective and a sense of gratitude, setting us up for daily success.
Research shows that incorporating workouts into our morning routines can boost our endorphins and make us feel more positive overall. And according to a new survey, Americans agree that morning workouts can significantly improve our mood and self-confidence.
Flex Fitness surveyed over 1,000 Americans to uncover the best time to workout and found that 65% of people agree morning workouts are the key to success, with 44% saying they’ve seen an improvement in their overall mood and self-confidence.
Benefits of morning workouts
According to the survey results, 41% of women say that they have better workout performance in the morning — with 21% of women favoring the 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. window.
Participants were asked to identify the top benefits of working out at their preferred times. Their responses included:
- Improved mood: 23.71%
- Improved self-confidence: 20.2%
- Better work/life balance: 17.73%
- Improved sleep: 14.64%
- Improved focus: 12.65%
- Improved performance at work: 11.25%
Compared to men, women have seen the greatest impact on their mood (21% vs. 19%), self-confidence (21% vs. 19%), and quality of sleep (17% vs 13%).

Tips for staying motivated to workout
The survey also revealed that 25% of people struggle to stay motivated because they don’t have a consistent workout routine. Another 19% said the lack of visible progress also impacts their ability to stay motivated. Here are a few tips to keep you motivated to move your body each morning:
- Start small. If you’re just starting, begin by committing to 10 to 30 minutes of exercise each morning, then gradually increase your time as you get into the habit of working out in the morning.
- Get an accountability partner. Having a workout buddy can provide accountability and make it more fun—making it easier to stick to your workout routine.
- Diversify your workouts. Switch up your routine to include different forms of movement so you don’t get bored doing the same thing every morning.
- Create a pre-workout routine. Activities like meditation, deep breathing, or stretching can help ease into the day and get into a workout mindset.
Whether you’re starting the day with strength training, yoga, or a pilates class, any form of movement can positively impact the trajectory of your day. By making exercise a priority in your daily routine, you can enhance your overall well-being and achieve your fitness goals.
