Interview with Stefanie Lattner of WeVibin

Stefanie Lattner began her career working at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on a team that developed one of the world’s first teleradiology systems. She also developed software to reconstruct MR and CT data and differentiated tissues within the brain. From there, she became head of research at Respironics, building a portfolio of 85 patents worldwide related to brain health.

And this is only a portion of her amazing career! All to give you some background on this brilliant and creative woman. With an MBA from the University of Michigan and having served on numerous boards, her journey led to starting WeVibin Inc. Onto the interview:

(I LOVE her answer to this first question) When did you first hear about vibration therapy?

I did not hear about vibrational therapy for brain health; I am the original inventor of the technology. My background is as an electrical and bioengineer, and I’ve spent years studying and creating technologies based on electrical, magnetic, and caloric stimulation, resulting in numerous patents worldwide. Those techniques work under the right conditions but are not pleasant to experience for the user and present their own risks.

My goal was to get clinical results that showed significant efficacy but in a manner that was much safer, non-invasive, and appropriate for use in the consumer market. Vibrational stimulation is unique because it’s safe, pleasant to wear, and delivers no power to the head. Many years of studying helped us identify and differentiate optimum vibrational sequences that are clinically beneficial.

What is WeVibin Inc?

WeVibin Inc is a health and wellness company that develops technology that improves cognitive performance. This includes increasing attention, focus, and reaction time, and decreasing impulsivity and feelings of frustration/anxiousness.

Please tell us a bit about the science behind what WeVibin offers.

We currently have two products available: the Squirrel Chaser software app, which is a cognitive performance test and brain-training app, and our ground-breaking Squirrel Tamer therapy headset.

The Squirrel Chaser app is a challenging cognitive performance test that objectively measures 10 different metrics of visual and auditory attention. It’s important to note that it is not a game. Games tend to simply measure how entertained or addicted the user is to the game itself.

To get accurate measures of attention and to retrain your brain for better performance, you have to be challenged to identify where you daydream, fail, over-anticipate, etc. Each of these can further change given the day, work environment, sleep habits, and any other behavioral input. We created Squirrel Chaser so the user can test themselves and track their progress on any given day, or over the course of time.

Because we are all different and react differently to different interventions, users are also able to test themselves before and after medication or home remedies such as yoga, meditation, supplements, specific types of exercise, nutritional programs, or even just coffee intake. We’ve found that when users can see their own data as to what helps or impairs their focus, they make healthier and more effective choices. Using the app on a daily basis also reinforces neural pathways, training your brain to increase attention and decrease distractibility and impulsivity.

The Squirrel Tamer Therapy is the result of decades of work. It was designed with the intention of making a consumer device that is a safe, clinically tested, non-prescription device that does not interfere with medication. The user can wear it whenever they need it (i.e. on-demand), in the home, work, or school environment, and will see immediate results including decreased anxiety and impulsivity, and improved attention and focus. How do you hope that these products will improve the healthcare industry?

We hope to empower people to take more control of their general health, specifically their brain health, by first understanding their starting point, then by identifying what they’re doing at home that either helps or hurts their cognitive performance, and finally by rebuilding neural connections that improve their performance or recovery. By doing so, we believe that we will be shifting the healthcare industry into caring first about health and subsequently addressing acute situations.

Currently, every ailment and observation is medicated as the first-line treatment, and our society is getting worse and worse. Insulin resistance and cardiovascular issues have exploded, sleep issues are off the charts, and mental health issues are out of control. These are all related. We need to stop this trajectory by getting to root causes to improve health first and only medicating as a last resort.

Who can benefit from what you offer at WeVibin?

Our technology was specifically designed to be used by a wide spectrum of adults, including those individuals who suffer from poor attention, lack of focus, and issues with impulsivity/addiction, all the way up to high-performing athletes/gamers/geniuses who want to optimize their brain performance. Our Squirrel Chaser software has 8 different levels to challenge this wide spectrum, and the Squirrel Tamer headset can be worn by everyone.

Excellent. Changing topics, looking back at your path to CEO and Founder, what do you wish you had known?

I wish I would have known to ask for mentors, and I wish I would have aligned quicker with people who were on similar paths. I also wish I would have had more confidence to set proper expectations and standards for the people I have worked with over the years.

Please share one obstacle you have faced and how you overcame it.

I remember being told by a professor in undergrad that I was taking a spot that should go to a male because I was just going to get pregnant and quit anyway. At a firm I worked for that supported start-ups, I was told by my male director to stop presenting my ideas and instead hint at them, and let the men in the room think they came up with them. In more recent years, I was screamed at 2 inches from my face by the male COO because I had to alert him that he was wrong.

Dismissing and silencing women still exists, and if it’s not as overt as my examples, it’s simply from ignoring their existence in certain spaces. The way I overcome these situations is by taking action, by producing rather than trying to convince. I still need to remind myself at times that this is always the best way to proceed, but excellent results are usually the best tool to help you rise above the noise.

Take action, YES! And in doing so, you inspire others. To a woman who wants to start a business but isn’t sure where to begin, what would you say?

I would say these things to anyone: Do your due diligence on the concept, the competition, the costs, your go-to-market strategy, and what support you will need.

For women specifically, I would tell them that, for the most part, people don’t rally around women like they do men. It’s important to know that you will be going it alone or with a small team longer than startups that are created by men. However, this should not deter you; rather, just plan for it.

If that gets overwhelming, how do you cope? What centers you?

I fully believe in the practice of meditation, gratefulness, and walking out in nature. These are helpful for anyone at any time, but I’ve found they are the quickest remedy when you are extremely busy too.

What do you say to those who don’t think beyond traditional medicine?

I would reinforce that traditional medicine is necessary and sets what is considered to be the “standard of care” by insurance companies. It’s what the insurance companies allow as medical treatments, what the doctor can prescribe, and what they can get paid for. It’s also the most likely avenue for the individual to have covered by their insurance.

However, it takes a lot of time for there to be an understanding of research and “new” technologies/solutions/pharmaceuticals, to work their way through the system, and eventually be adopted. For these reasons, traditional approaches are typically 25 years older than the latest research. During that time, new understanding is emerging and can be remarkably more beneficial than the “tried-and-true” methods. These new understandings can be more effective and simpler than medicating everyone.

An easy example is the explosion of diabetes and weight-related issues in this country. If you see a doctor, they will prescribe pharmaceutical intervention (or surgery, in some cases of obesity). While there is certainly a subset of the population where pharmaceutical intervention/surgery is necessary, it has been shown again and again that eating unprocessed foods (as one example) has a better and more long-lasting effect not only on weight gain, but diabetes, pain from inflammation, sleep apnea, cognitive functioning, and a whole host of other conditions. Unfortunately, the perception in the general public is that the drug is more effective, which is not factually true.

Well explained. What do you hope women take away from your life story?

My hope is that women continually coach themselves to be brave and follow, if not run, towards the direction that is pulling them. If you’re doing anything different or outside of what’s considered an acceptable female role, you will get a lot of push-back from family, your circle of friends and work colleagues, and from people who have never met you because it is still not accepted for females to lead or to be the innovator.

You just have to trust that if you’re being pulled in a certain direction, you may have to distance yourself and forge ahead. Eventually, everyone else will get on board.

  1. Hi Christy, this is very interesting and should help sufferers from ADHD or ADD. The comments about working in a man’s world are very relatable to me. It gets very tiring over time.
