How to maintain your smile: 5 tips

Maintain your smile

Your smile is your best accessory. No matter what your personal style is, a smile goes with everything. It is one of the first things people notice when they see you. It is important that you keep your smile looking fabulous and healthy. Here are some ways that will keep your smile looking flawless. The five main tips to maintain your smile are:

Floss everyday

Flossing is not a step that you should skip over, though it may be tempting because it seems like it does not make that much of a difference.

That is quite the contrary, though, as flossing is a part of having a confident smile. Flossing your teeth daily ensures you are getting rid of the plaque that can build up between your teeth and under your gumlines since it can be tough to reach using a toothbrush.

Wrap the floss around your finger, tightly. Then, insert the floss in the space between your teeth and your gums.

Be sure to gently slide the floss up and down under the gumlines. To maintain your smile, do this activity two to three times before moving on to the next tooth.

See your dentist twice a year

This is more than going to your emergency dentist whenever there is a pressing issue. Having a routine tooth cleaning every six months will help keep up your oral and physical health.

Irregular teeth cleanings can lead to periodontal disease, which causes swollen, receding, and bleeding gums. This disease is also linked to other health complications like heart attack, stroke, diabetes, obesity, premature births, and sleep apnea.

Quit smoking to maintain your smile

Smoking is bad for your health. There is no easy way to say it.

It can stain your teeth, soaking deep into the enamel, making whitening nearly impossible. Smoking also damages your gums.

The more you smoke, the more likely your gums will start to recede and grow big pockets around the teeth. Ultimately, it makes your teeth appear longer and it makes it very hard to reverse the effects of gum disease.

Take it easy on the red wine, coffee, and tea

All of these mentioned drinks, although they are tasty, are known culprits of staining your teeth. Just like smoking, they can cause superficial stains.

To maintain your smile, your dentist will still be able to polish off the stains, but sometimes they can also cause deeper stains to your tooth enamel.

That does not mean you have cut those drinks out of your life for good. You may have to do some finessing, though.

For example, you can drink those beverages out of a straw to decrease the stain on your teeth. Another option is to rinse your mouth out with water, so at least the dark liquid is not just sitting on your teeth all day.

The final tip for maintaining your smile: Be picky with whitening products

With the advancement of technology, you can choose from plenty of whitening products. You can buy either gel pens, rinses, whitening toothpaste, strips, over-the-counter trays, and laser whitening. Not all whitening products are created the same.

They have different properties that target specific areas. It all depends on what kind of whitening you are looking for.
