DIY household cleaners

If this pandemic has taught us one thing, it’s how important hygiene is and how much we really should pay attention to it. It starts with personal hygiene and washing hands, but it does not and should not stop there. Cleaning your clothes and your home can be equally important, which is why we reached out to cleaning pros from Geaux Maids to get some pro-level tips on home cleaning. They shared with us one really interesting fact – you can make DIY household cleaners.

Even though they may not be as potent as store-bought alternatives, they certainly can do the job and are less toxic. Oh, and for the most part, they will save you some money while making your home clean. I’d say it’s a good deal.

Window cleaner

Here’s the first revelation about cleaning products – window cleaners are largely made up of rubbing alcohol. Seeing how this substance is really good at cleaning smooth surfaces such as windows, most window cleaners are just rubbing alcohol with a few other ingredients.

So, why not make your own? All you need is a spray bottle, some rubbing alcohol, a bit of vinegar and water. Oh, and maybe some essential oils to make the whole thing smell better.

The ideal ratio is 2 cups of water with a half cup of vinegar (make sure to use white vinegar) and about 1/3 of a cup of rubbing alcohol, with a few drops of your preferred essential oil to cover up the vinegar and alcohol smells.

All-purpose DIY household cleaners

For a majority of cleaning purposes in your home, the chances are that you use a single cleaning product. And if you’re not, feel free to do so. These all-round cleaning products contain detergents that are strong enough to get rid of stains, but they aren’t abrasive or too aggressive to damage surfaces.

However, if you run out of such a cleaning product, don’t worry – just make some more yourself. And it is fairly simple, too.

You will need some lemon rinds, some rosemary, vinegar, and water. Mix an equal part of water and white vinegar with some lemon rind and rosemary for the smell.

Mix this well and leave to sit for a few days. You can leave it for up to a week.

Once ready, this cleaner will help you remove stains from your tile floors, hardwood floors, clean trash cans, and more. Just make sure not to use it on stone (especially granite), as the acidity may damage the stone.

Scrubbing cleaner

From time to time, you will encounter some heavy stains that will require rubbing and some serious elbow grease. If you’re out of your favorite cleaner, there may still be something you can do on your own, if you have borax. Seeing how it’s a common house cleaner, you probably have some lying around the house.

This cleaning solution is really simple. Take half a lemon, dip it in borax and scrub the surface that needs to be cleaned. Rinse the surface and repeat if necessary. Just like with the all-purpose cleaner, this type of cleaner is really not suitable for marble and granite.

Kitchen cleaner

If you need to clean something in your kitchen, you don’t even need to be very resourceful to create an ideal cleaning product. As long as you have some baking soda, according to cleaning professionals we talked to this week.

Four tablespoons of water should be mixed with about a quart of water. Mix it well.

This solution can clean your stainless steel back to the new-like shine. Oh, and as an added bonus, baking soda is a great deodorizer. Cleaning your fridge or your garbage disposal comes with the extra benefit of being refreshed, too.

Takeaway on DIY household cleaners

Enjoy your clean house! During a time when many of us are spending a lot of time indoors, it’s more important than ever to be comfortable and happy there. As you can tell from the recipes above, these cleaning products are easy to make, and they can last a long time too.

  1. Love these awesome ideas, Christy! Natural is the way to go, in my humble opinion, whenever possible! It’s truly amazing what the likes of vinegar, baking soda, peroxide, essential oils and rubbing alcohol can do!

I love the idea of adding lemon rind and rosemary for scent. Yum! Who wouldn’t love to walk into their home and smell that?!? Plus, lemon, along with other citrus scents, are known to be potent all-natural mood boosters! I’d say that’s a win-win for sure.

Thank you for sharing yet another awesome post my friend. You’re the best! Sending you all my love and best wishes for the remainder of 2020 to be your most fulfilling months yet! 🤗

  2. Fab post! I’ve been using vinegar a lot, since I found out how wonderfully cleans certain things. It’s a must for decalcifying!

    1. Ahh, laundry stains… I should have known that! I just bought some cleaning strength vinegar. It’s not for food, although it is not poisonous if a child swallowed it. I never knew there was such a thing, I am excited! Outta my way! I’m a lean, mean cleaning machine! :D
