Meet Dr. Angie Aboutalib, Lifestyle Medicine Specialist

Welcome! I’m curious: How did the idea for WholeMed come to be?

My journey to medicine has been anything but conventional. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working in over 22 hospitals across the country and studying medicine in various parts of the world. This diverse experience has given me a unique perspective on healthcare — particularly the fragmented nature of it. Today, too many patients feel like just another number in the system, their care reduced to a prescription and a set of symptoms. The deeply personal aspect of healing has been lost.

That’s why I created the WholeMed Method: to bring back the integration of mind and body. I wanted to provide a truly personalized approach to healthcare—one that is rooted in evidence-based science while addressing the root causes of illness, not just the symptoms.

Every aspect of WholeMed has been crafted from my own personal experience. I wanted to immerse myself fully in the method, to understand it on a deeper level, so I could genuinely guide others on their journey.

I am a trained internal medicine physician with a subspecialty in lifestyle medicine, and I am also a yoga, mindfulness, and meditation instructor. My education has provided me with a deep understanding of the core principles of both Western medicine and lifestyle medicine, alongside the Blue Zone longevity pillars, all grounded in evidence-based practices. I use the best of what each modality has to offer to provide a comprehensive, scientifically backed approach to optimizing health and well-being.

Using this knowledge, I’ve created a framework built on three essential pillars: Mind, Body, and Purpose. These are the foundations of WholeMed, and we approach them with the latest scientific research to support our work.

To further enhance healing, we integrate cutting-edge technology and advanced lab work, allowing us to gather in-depth insights into your health. Additionally, we utilize unique Alpha wave repatterning techniques to help treat emotional blocks, offering a more comprehensive approach to overcoming obstacles.

By combining your unique data with your input in all three areas, we craft a fully customized plan—one that’s tailored specifically to you, with the goal of creating lasting, transformative results.

Patients and healing quote by Dr. Angie Aboutalib of WholeMed

The WholeMed Method integrates lifestyle medicine with Blue Zone longevity strategies. Could you explain how this combination may benefit women’s health?

The WholeMed Method integrates lifestyle medicine with Blue Zones longevity strategies to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to health. This combination targets key health areas that directly influence well-being, offering a scientifically supported framework to optimize nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, and more.

For women, proper nutrition is critical for managing conditions such as hormonal imbalances, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease. Customized physical activity, including strength training, aerobic exercise, and flexibility routines, is vital for maintaining muscle mass, preventing bone density loss, and improving heart health.

Sleep is another cornerstone of the WholeMed Method, as quality sleep regulates hormones, supports immune function, and helps manage stress, which is especially important during life transitions like pregnancy and menopause.

Stress management is also prioritized, as chronic stress can contribute to anxiety, depression, and physical conditions such as hypertension and autoimmune disorders. Evidence-based techniques such as mindfulness and deep breathing, combined with professional mental health support, help mitigate stress and its negative effects.

Environmental factors, including exposure to environmental toxins and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), are critical considerations in women’s health, particularly regarding hormone-related conditions. EDCs, which interfere with the endocrine system, can disrupt normal hormone signaling and contribute to disorders such as infertility, breast cancer, and thyroid dysfunction. The WholeMed Method incorporates strategies to minimize exposure to these harmful substances by promoting the use of non-toxic products and improving indoor environmental quality, which can significantly reduce the risk of these health complications.

Additionally, the WholeMed Method places a strong emphasis on preventive care, ensuring early detection and proactive management of health risks. Beyond prevention, we also provide dedicated support for women diagnosed with breast cancer, focusing on optimizing their response to chemotherapy and other treatments to enhance outcomes and increase the likelihood of achieving full remission.

Your program emphasizes the mind, body, and purpose working together. How do you define each of these pillars, and why are they crucial for many women’s overall well-being?

The WholeMed approach emphasizes the interconnectedness of mind, body, and purpose as essential pillars for optimal health. These three elements are integral to women’s overall well-being because they reflect how physical, mental, and emotional health work together in harmony. When balanced, these pillars enhance quality of life, vitality, and longevity. Each pillar not only influences the others but also plays a vital role in supporting a woman’s health journey, particularly in navigating the unique challenges women face.

The Mind pillar focuses on mental and emotional health, including cognitive function, emotional resilience, and psychological well-being. We utilize Alpha Wave Repatterning through brainwave entrainment to optimize mental clarity, emotional balance, and reduce stress. Additionally, we incorporate neuroplasticity techniques and strategies to enhance neurotransmitter function, supporting cognitive health and emotional well-being. This scientifically supported approach promotes long-term mental health and resilience.

The Body pillar focuses on physical health, encompassing nutrition, exercise, sleep, and overall care. We employ cutting-edge technology to assess and train physical health, allowing for precise, personalized interventions. Additionally, we utilize advanced laboratory testing to gain a deeper understanding of individual health markers, enabling us to tailor nutrition and fitness strategies.

Lastly, the Purpose pillar emphasizes finding meaning and direction in life. This aspect involves fostering a sense of fulfillment, goal setting, and creating a deeper connection to one’s values and passions.

By integrating these three pillars—mind, body, and purpose—the WholeMed Method. These pillars form the foundation for not only surviving but thriving, ensuring that women achieve optimal health and long-term well-being.

Quote on lifespan and health on a purple and teal background

Proactive disease prevention and reversing biological aging are important to the WholeMed Method. Can you speak a bit about this?

Proactive disease prevention and the reversal of biological aging are core principles of the WholeMed Method. Biological age refers to the functional state of your body’s systems and organs relative to your chronological age. Essentially, it’s a measure of how well your body is performing compared to its actual age, considering factors like physical health, lifestyle habits, and genetic predisposition.

By optimizing these lifestyle factors, the WholeMed Method helps slow the biological aging process, reducing the risk of age-related chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative conditions.

We focus not just on lifespan but on healthspan—the period of life spent in optimal health. This scientifically driven approach aims to enhance longevity, improve quality of life, and empower individuals to age more slowly at a cellular level, ultimately promoting vitality and resilience throughout the years.

Professional burnout is an issue, especially for many women juggling multiple roles in the household, family, and job. How does the WholeMed Method address and mitigate burnout?

Professional burnout is a significant challenge, particularly for women who juggle multiple roles in the household, family, and career. The WholeMed Method addresses burnout by first identifying its underlying stages and then providing tailored strategies to manage and mitigate its effects.

We don’t just educate our members about burnout; our professional life coach works closely with each individual to help them navigate the emotional and physical toll of burnout. Through personalized coaching, stress management techniques, and lifestyle modifications, we guide members to regain emotional balance, restore energy, and establish sustainable ways to integrate work, family, and personal well-being. This approach helps individuals overcome burnout and build long-term resilience for improved mental and physical health.

How do you personalize the approach to what the individual needs?

To personalize the approach for each individual, we begin with a comprehensive intake form followed by consultations with our lifestyle medicine physician, Alpha Wave Repatterning Practitioner, Biometric and Fitness directors, as well as a professional life coach. After gathering this initial information, we conduct advanced labs and biometric testing to gain a thorough understanding of their health.

Progress is tracked through an app that syncs with their smartwatch, allowing us to monitor key metrics in real time. Our multidisciplinary team then collaborates to review all assessments and create a tailored plan designed to address the individual’s specific needs, ensuring an effective, science-driven approach to their health journey.

As a certified yoga instructor, you’ve integrated Eastern practices into Western medicine. How can yoga be part of the WholeMed Method, and what unique benefits does it offer to women?

As a certified yoga instructor, I’ve seamlessly integrated Eastern practices into Western medicine, using yoga as a powerful therapeutic tool. In the WholeMed Method, yoga is not just a form of exercise but a transformative healing practice that offers unique benefits, particularly for women.

I’ve had the privilege of helping women with fertility challenges by combining evidence-based mindfulness techniques with targeted yoga poses, all supported by scientific research. This combination has shown remarkable success, with studies indicating that the mindful approach and specific yoga postures can enhance fertility outcomes, often surpassing the effectiveness of traditional treatments like IVF.

How does your organization give back to those in need, and why is this so important to your mission?

Having witnessed the closure of two hospitals in underserved areas—one of which I worked closely with the mayor to try to save—I became acutely aware of the disparities in healthcare access. This experience deeply influenced my belief that everyone deserves equal access to quality healthcare. It is the core reason I founded WholeMed Gives Back.

Every quarter, WholeMed identifies individuals or communities in need and offers grants to help them access our program or conducts outreach in underserved areas. Individuals or organizations can apply through our website, and we select the most compelling stories to provide support. This initiative is vital to our mission, ensuring that healthcare is not a privilege but a right for all and helping us make a meaningful impact where it’s needed most.

Quote on women, overwhelm, and the WholeMed Method. Purple background.

The WholeMed 8-Week Program is designed to rejuvenate and renew participants. What specific outcomes have some women experienced after completing this program?

The WholeMed 8-Week Program is designed to rejuvenate, renew, and empower members on their health journey. While each individual enters the program with unique goals, we work closely with them to refine and prioritize their most important objectives. Although it’s impossible to tackle everything at once, we focus on what matters most and create a personalized plan to achieve those top priorities.

The ultimate goal is to build a sustainable process that ensures lasting success long after the program ends. Our aim is to equip WholeMed members with the knowledge, tools, and scientific insights they need to take control of their health, leaving them empowered to continue thriving on their own. The outcomes? Increased energy, improved mental clarity, enhanced physical health, and a renewed sense of purpose—transforming the way women approach their well-being for years to come.

Improving time management skills is part of the principles your program teaches. Can you share one strategy that might help a woman who wants to balance personal health goals with career and family responsibilities?

Time management can be a challenge for women, especially when balancing personal health goals with career and family responsibilities. One effective strategy we teach in WholeMed is Distributed Cognition. Studies show that only 2% of people can truly multitask effectively, and trying to do so often leads to burnout and decreased productivity.

Personally, I’m frequently asked how I manage to juggle so many responsibilities, and the key lies in being intentional with my time—how I focus on a task and knowing when to unplug and recharge. By applying Distributed Cognition and other unique techniques, women can create a more balanced, sustainable approach to managing their health, career, and family without feeling overwhelmed.
