Spotlight on Arianne: Inspiration on International Women’s Day

On this International Women’s Day, Arianne Lang’s story is a great one to share. It shows how one woman’s proactive decision can create wider change. Let’s talk prevention, advocacy, healthcare accessibility, tech, and inspiration.

The Diagnosis

In May 2022, at age 44, Lang took a crucial step that would change her life. Encouraged by a friend, she accessed British Columbia’s free breast-cancer screening program even though she had no symptoms or family history.

Life-Saving Combo: Mammogram and Virtual Care

As one of approximately 6.5 million Canadians without a family physician, Lang faced a significant challenge in receiving and following up on her results, so she turned to TELUS Health MyCare – a decision that would prove life-saving.

“In many ways, knowing that I could have my mammogram results sent there may have saved my life,” Arianne said. A concerning result on the mammogram led to a diagnosis of breast cancer. Her early diagnosis enabled successful treatment through surgery and radiation therapy and today she is currently cancer-free.

Access to virtual care provided more than just a means to receive her mammogram results; it became her lifeline. She was able to receive ongoing care from a consistent physician through recovery. That included access to mental health counselling, a vital part of her treatment plan.

The Mental Impact of Breast Cancer

While many women have an idea of how cancer could impact physical health, the mental toll may be underestimated, at least at first. For Arianne, the mental strain is one she explained well. “Having to share the news with my son was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.

In addition, maintaining our normal routine while battling my physical symptoms proved extremely challenging.”

Cancer-Free and Inspiring, That is Arianne Today

Today, Arianne is in remission and thriving. She continues to get regular check-ins and she sticks to her preventive treatment plan so the cancer does not return.

She has transformed her experience into a mission to support other women. Her activism is awesome to see.

Her advocacy work includes:

● Leading the TELUS CIBC Run for the Cure team

● Organizing community fundraising events to raise money for breast cancer research

● Collaborating with Dense Breasts Canada to share her story

● Supporting newly diagnosed women through their cancer journeys

● Actively campaigning for lowering the mammogram self-referral age from 50 to 40 across Canada.

“Many women have told me they’ve finally booked their mammogram after hearing my story,” Arianne said. “They weren’t aware they should be screening at 40.” Her influence has extended beyond personal connections to include signing federal petitions advocating for earlier screening access.

Raising Awareness

Arianne’s story resonates particularly strongly in her hometown of Anmore, near Vancouver. As a resident of a smaller community, she understands the unique challenges women face accessing healthcare services.

Through social media and community activities, she continues to raise awareness about several things. She helps spotlight the importance of preventive care, regular screening, and the availability of technologies that help remove some barriers.

Arianne Lang’s fundraising efforts have generated thousands of dollars for breast cancer awareness. And her advocacy work with Dense Breasts Canada has spread the message about the importance of understanding breast density and its impact on cancer detection.

On International Women’s Day 2025

This International Women’s Day, Arianne’s journey reminds us how personal challenges can inspire public advocacy. Her story shows the importance of early detection and also how accessible healthcare solutions help save lives.

For women across Canada and beyond, the lessons from Arianne’s story are clear: take control of your health journey, advocate for yourself, and use available resources – traditional or digital – to access the care you need. Her experience shows that while the Canadian healthcare system may have gaps, innovative solutions and determined advocacy can help bridge them.
