One of the big decisions when it comes to planning a resort vacation is what to wear (well, after you book the flight and accomodations, of course). If you’re looking for resort wear for women over 50, Katie has some great ideas in this guest post!
If you’re planning a resort vacation, you’re probably searching for warm-weather garments. To make sure that you can feel pulled together and stylish without having to spend a lot of time coordinating your outfits, your shopping, and packing choices need to be both concise and coordinated. The tips below can save you stress and inspire you to bring garments you love.
Essentials to Bring on Resort Vacation
You’ll need at least one blend or cotton sundress. Put it on over your favorite bathing suit to make sure you can also use it as a cover-up if you need to. If you generally wear skirts or dresses for work but you’re used to wearing hose, make sure that you have undergarments that can help reduce chafing.
Bring at least two pairs of sandals. A pair of rubber bottomed flip-flops or walking sandals can be ideal for use beside the pool. A more formal pair can be helpful when you plan to do a little sight-seeing or shopping.
At least one bathing suit that allows you to swim and to sunbathe will be necessary. If you love to be in the water, bring two suits so you can allow one to dry while you wear the other.
Simple tees or tops and capris or shorts will also be necessary. If you prefer to wear cotton garments in warm weather, make sure you hang them up as soon as you get to the resort.
Finally, consider bringing a large cotton shawl or scarf in a solid color. If you find that going from the heat of the outdoors to an air-conditioned restaurant leaves you shivering, a pretty shawl can help you stay relaxed and looking sharp.
Examples of Resort-Friendly Outfits
One of the simplest things you can do to stay comfortable when you pack for your resort vacation is to treat yourself to a long cover-up with a hood. Swimming during the hottest part of the day is a great way to beat the heat, but breezes can cool you off quickly. An oversized hooded cover-up can keep you warm and comfy in any season of the year.
Focus on a base color. If your favorite summer gear is khaki, invest in a jute tote bag and jute-trimmed sandals so you look pulled together immediately. If you don’t have a base color or need to pick up some new clothes, consider choosing one shade for the bottom of your outfits. Black capris go with black sandals and those sandals will pair beautifully with a black floral maxi dress. This tip also helps you pack less for the trip!
How to Pick the Right Swimsuit for Your Resort Vacation
If you plan to swim, walk, and swim some more, get yourself a two-piece suit with board shorts. As you stroll along the beach and your suit dries, you can cover up with a long cotton shirt and a wide-brimmed hat.
Stick with simple, solid colors for your bathing suits. Bringing a couple of suits that are both black means that you can easily cover them up with a simple sundress or a solid cover-up shirt.
You might also choose to invest in a bathing suit that offers some feminine style. Consider picking up a bathing suit that offers a bit of flair on top, such as a ruffle or other detail that will allow you to let your bathing suit show.
How to Shop for Your Resort Vacation
Don’t buy smaller garments with plans to lose weight. Buy things that fit well now and offer both comfort and style. Focus on versatile garments. Shorts are casual, but a skort can be just as comfy and serve as a dressier option. If you prefer something a bit longer, treat yourself to flowing capris or gauchos to enjoy a bit more coverage.
Stick with colors you love. Invest in fabrics that will move. If you never buy linen because you struggle with feeling rumpled, don’t buy linen. Make sure you purchase undergarments that will move well with and under your new clothing.
Enjoying a resort vacation can certainly be done with clothing you currently own. However, if you’ve been thinking about a new bathing suit or just want something new and pretty to treat yourself, stick with the colors you adore and focus on movement and comfort.

Excellent travel wear tips. Try and pack things that don’t have much weight = more suitcase weight for more items. :) <3
