Most parents struggle with how much technology to give to their kids and when. In this cell phone, laptop, tablet, and social media world, keeping your children from being exposed is incredibly difficult if not impossible. Still, does a 10-year-old need their own cell phone? This debate is a problem for all parents, including celebrities. Perhaps surprisingly, some celebrity parents have strict rules about their children’s cell phone use. Below are five celebrities who set strict limits on their children’s technology.
1. P!nk
P!nk has never been one to follow society’s rules, and she is also a fiercely protective mother. That’s why she doesn’t want her children with Carey Hart, Willow and Jameson, to have phones too early. That said, she isn’t rejecting the idea outright. While she felt ten was too early, she will decide when it’s okay depending on the circumstances.
2. Julia Roberts
Two of Julia’s children are out of the house now, but she maintained simple phone rules for them and their younger brother. She and her husband had a charging station where everyone’s phones had to go when they arrived home. No phones at the table, ever. These rules allowed for better family communication without being overly restrictive.
3. Penelope Cruz
Penelope takes a firm stand against phone and social media access for her children. She feels that society has no idea what early exposure to this technology does to their brains. As a result, she wants her children to be “much older” when they get their own phones. And she has forbidden social media until they are 16.
4. Melinda French Gates
This philanthropist and activist for girls and women established clear cell phone rules with the kids within the home when she was married to the King of computer technology, Bill Gates. The couple did not allow their kids to have cell phones until they were 14. They also established a time when the youngsters had to shut off all screens so that they would get a good night’s sleep.
5. Madonna
Madonna has learned from her mistakes. She regrets giving her oldest two children phones when they were 13, claiming the move hurt her relationship with them. As a result, she is holding out on phones for her younger four as long as possible. She also forbids TV in her home.
Celebrity Phone Rules
Celebrity children are more vulnerable to social media posts than other children. Their parents are in the news frequently, and many hurtful and often untrue things are written about them. Smartphones allow children easy access to the internet and may expose them to negative comments about their parents. Members of the public may also target the children of celebrities and bully them via social media.
Rules for Your Children
You may not be famous, but you should be careful about giving your children cell phones and access to social media, too. You do not want to expose them too early. Once you decide they are ready for phones and social media, monitoring their activity online should be a priority.
No child needs unlimited cell phone use. It’s too easy for them to tune out their family members and stay glued to their phones. After all, many adults fall into that trap. A prepaid phone service is one way to control their time on the phone.

HI Christy, an interesting article. My sons both received cell phones in senior primary school (aged about 11). At that point, they started needing them for school as the communications all went on-line.
Ah, there wouldn’t have been a way around that then without jeapordizing their school performances. That makes sense, Robbie!
