The Power of Pets on Women’s Mental Health

Woman in wheelchair holds cat: Pets & mental health

Most people see having a pet as another responsibility. However, the mental health benefits of pets for women and others outweigh the work involved for many. Pets in the home can positively impact you. It’s hard to stay in a bad mood when you look at your adorable cat or dog at the door!

Pets offer the emotional support you can’t get from anyone else. There’s nothing better than having your fur baby snuggle in your lap. As you’ll see below, pets positively contribute to women’s mental health. There’s been a rise in pets as companion therapy.

Get ready to learn about the health benefits of pet ownership. Your relationship with your pet isn’t one-sided, though; you’ll also look out for their health. That’s why this post also includes tips to keep your pet happy and healthy.

Mental Health Benefits of Pets

The science shows that pets are good for your health. For women diagnosed with depression, an animal can potentially enhance a personalized treatment plan.

Research shows that interacting with adorable animals can increase oxytocin levels in your brain, contributing to feelings of happiness. The bonding element is real!

Pets can also decrease anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate levels. And there are many more benefits that you’ll embrace from having a doggie, feline, or other fur baby at your side. That is especially the case if you’re a woman with a mental health condition. Here are just some of the emotional benefits:

  • Active Lifestyle. A dog can bring more physical activity into your life. Dogs need to go for walks and play. This a benefit if you’re someone who needs to be more active.
  • Companionship. I look forward to companionship and unconditional love with my cats. Your fur baby makes you feel loved and wanted, too. That can also shift from focusing on yourself to focusing on a living being.
  • Meaning and Purpose. The little one can give you more meaning and purpose in life. Adopting a pet from a shelter makes you feel good about helping another being. You rescue a pet from a terrible situation and make them comfortable for the rest of their life.
  • Sensory Stress Relief. Touch is an important contributor to women’s mental health, so it’s next on this pets benefits list. Interacting with an animal releases dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin. Simply petting your dog or cat reduces stress, research shows.

Two More Benefits

  • Social Connection. A pet encourages you to be more social and active. You could visit the local dog park or hiking trails, meeting other pet parents along the way.
  • Responsibility. Responsibility gives you a sense of purpose. It can help you focus on what’s important and improve your self-esteem.

As you can see, pets aren’t just good for your mood. They also offer physical benefits that improve your health. Your lifestyle will likely change because of bringing the little cutie into your life. For example, your dog might inspire you to go for a walk or run. We are considering taking our cats out on leashes for walks!

Keep Pets Happy and Healthy

Your pet eventually becomes a part of your family. You are responsible for meeting specific needs as their human parent. It’s up to you to provide them with those needs daily. You’re responsible for their well-being and happiness just as much as they are for yours.

Keeping your pet healthy prolongs their life. It can also lead to better behavior. Your pet is more well-behaved. Here are some ways to keep your pet happy and healthy:

  • Exercise with your pet
  • Feed your pet a healthy diet
  • Invest in pet insurance
  • Spay or neuter your pet
  • Take your pet to the veterinarian once a year (or as soon as possible if you notice an issue)
  • Vaccinate your pet against diseases

Putting It All Together

The science shows that happy pets make for happy women pet parents. Cats, dogs, and other fur babies fulfill basic human needs. You’re less likely to experience loneliness and isolation. Cuddling or petting your animal calms you down whenever you’re stressed or anxious.

Your pet becomes your companion. For me, the cats are my kids! They can exercise with you, cuddle together as you watch TV, and make you laugh. You can still reap the benefits even if you can’t become a full-time pet owner. Animal shelters and rescue groups always want volunteers, so that volunteer activity could be in the near future.

You can even foster an animal until it finds a permanent home. Dogs and cats are popular choices. Gerbils, rabbits, and hamsters can also be amazing family members, among others.

There is a wonderful world of animals who want your love and attention, if you are ready for a companion animal. Some pet owners are content with having an aquarium full of fish. Looking at one can promote more peace in your life. Find who you love and reap some of these mental health benefits.

  1. I just love animals and find the bond you can have with your pet can help reduce the feeling of isolation. There’s nothing better than getting home and being greeted by a wagging tail and lots of slobbery kisses!

    1. Awe, I love the greetings our cats give us when we get home! I know what you mean x

  2. Thank you for appreciating the content here, Peggy, and for having opened your home to animals over the years. I have no doubt that you are a very giving cat and dog mamma šŸ’—

  3. Such an informative article, Christy. When I come home I always get such a welcoming from my dog. Even if I’ve been gone just to put the garbage out it’s like I’ve been gone all day! Having a pet gives you a sense of purpose – someone to take care of and in return you get lots of affection. I do volunteer work with my dog and he really brings a lot of cheer. And it’s so true that a pet can make you laugh by the fun things they do! Happy Holidays, Christy. xx

    1. Oh I loved reading how your dog helps you and others, Carol! From improving mood to having a sense of purpose, so many benefits ~ You hit the nail on the head. Happy holidays to you, doggie, and rest of family xx

  4. We don’t currently have a pet šŸ˜”
It’s okay, too busy to give it what it deserves.
What occurred to me while reading is how good of an idea pet insurance is. I didn’t even know it existed!

Btw I can comment easily in the reader but when I go to your site I have to put in all my contact info. Then the formatting is troublesome and it’s hard to find the submit/reply button. If you see this comment, I was successful! Finally ;)

Turns out I had to copy my text… leave your site, and then go back to the reader and paste what I wrote, in order for it to submit—after all of that inputting of data and having the button be missing a few times.

    1. It says –

      Like this:
      Loading…….

      but nothing comes in.
It does happen once in a while on the odd other blog, but if I refresh, they come in.
I usually had to refresh on your blog, and they would come in.
Last couple of weeks I’ve tried refreshing your posts several times, to no avail.
I wonder if others get that? If you notice less likes, it’s a possibility.

Last few days when it says that bit about cookies at the bottom, then I would click yes or no, I see it but it flashes by too fast for clicking.

I clear cookies and browsing data regularly.
I’ll be clearing again soon. I’ll check your blog right away to see if there’s a change.

Anyway, I can always write WP if it’s me. However, it’s really only on your blog at this time.
      xoxoxox

    2. Thank you for this info, Resa. I’m glad you are at least able to comment here. But bummer not being able to ā€œlikeā€ anything here in a long time.

I am getting likes so it works for some folks. I don’t know if it’s less than usual or not as it’s holiday season and the world is screwy at this time (to put it mildly).

My reality lately is a lot of changes in the blog backend so that could be impacting things for sure.

I’m sorry you’re having issues here! I’ll monitor things xx

      Hugs 🄰 Happy holidays!
