Lucy Brazier on the inspiration behind the new audiobook
The PorterGirl series started life as an anonymous blog where I chronicled (often tongue-in-cheek) my strange new life as the first female Deputy Head Porter at an eminent Cambridge College. I was staggered and moved by the sheer weight of history and tradition of the place, which more often than not made it feel like inhabiting a parallel universe – where the norms of modern society simply didn’t apply.
It’s not that they didn’t like women – they just didn’t seem too keen on women in the Porters’ Lodge. Reactions to my arrival ranged from novel curiosity to outright combative misogynism. Yet, it was a seductive and esoteric world that I came to love and, in many ways, admire.
I soon developed a penchant for writing down my adventures and experiences, and these quickly grew into creating a parody, a fictional account of what may or may not have gone on behind closed doors. Eventually, this grew into a series of four books, and I am now very proud to present the first in the series, First Lady of the Keys, as an audiobook.
I love working with voice artist and producer Sandie Keane. She immediately threw herself into the Old College ethos and quickly picked up the dry humour of the novel.
Hearing her read my words for the first time was quite an experience, and I fell in love with the book all over again. I hope my readers will do the same.
