You’re a woman running your own business – Awesome! Now let’s make sure that the business continues to expand. The secret? Being a great leader. Here’s your guide to success as a leader.
Have a vision
It begins with being the best version of yourself. That means having a vision of what you want your life to look like. It’s an ideal portrait of what the future could be like, and it should be specific enough to help you reach your goals. Your vision will guide you in the right direction when things get tough, so make sure that it’s something that truly inspires you. The following tips will help you create a great vision for leadership success.
Start with yourself
Think about what makes up your best self. What do you love doing? What are your strengths? What is the purpose of your business? Your personal values and self care basics should play a big role here too. Outline specific steps needed to achieve this goal (i.e., write down every step necessary). This helps keep everything organized, so there isn’t any confusion later when trying to achieve them all together. What you’re doing right now is defining exactly what success in your business looks like.
Be financially savvy for success as a leader
How you manage your finances says a lot about you. Ensure your finances stay to keep your debt as low as possible. Maybe you want to go back to school to earn another degree. You could go on the Marketplace by Navient and search for personalized rates for student loans. Once you find one that works, you can fill out the application and apply.
Learn from other business owners
It may seem obvious, but it’s worth noting that if you want to be a successful woman in business, it’s helpful to look at other women who have done it before. If you don’t know how to start a business or how to run one once it’s up and running, look at those who successfully do so.
What did they do well? How can you apply their strategies to your business? What do they do differently from others that allows them to stand out from the crowd?
Once you’ve learned from the good (and bad) of other people’s experiences, take those lessons and apply them to your own situation. You’ll be better equipped to identify potential mistakes before they happen.
Create your strategy
Successful people almost always have a plan. Thinking through the steps and milestones required to achieve something increases the chances of it happening. A good plan is simple and easy to follow, so ensure you’re not overcomplicating things by adding too many steps. Your goal should be to create a plan that makes sense for your business but also keeps things moving forward in a logical fashion so that every step leads directly to the next one.
Take action for success as a leader
You’ll be the one who makes the magic happen. While you won’t be able to control everything, you can control how you react to challenges and opportunities, as well as your willingness to take action. Start by taking action now to create a plan of what you will do in the next month or year. Then make sure it’s part of your daily routine so that it gets done consistently until it becomes a habit.
Learn from the haters
Now that you’ve built up your confidence, it’s time to deal with the haters. This can be difficult for many people because they take these negative opinions personally. The best thing you can do in this situation is to learn from them instead of getting upset over them.
If someone leaves a mean comment on your Instagram post about how much they hate what you’re selling, don’t let it get under your skin. Instead, try asking yourself why they don’t care for it. Maybe it wasn’t priced right, or maybe their friend told them that they would never buy something like that.
Whatever the reason, remember not everyone has the same taste. So try looking at those comments as feedback rather than insults.
Successful leaders don’t let fear get in the way
Stop letting fear get in your way. Everyone is afraid of something: failure, rejection, disappointment, looking uninformed or being wrong. But if you let these fears stop you from trying, nothing will change for you. Even if you’re feeling unsure of yourself, still follow through and see where it takes you.
