Are you approaching the end of your time at school? So here is a little bit of advice when choosing what to do after leaving school.
It can be quite an intimidating time if you haven’t figured out what you want to do. There are several options out there, and it can feel like you will be pressured into something whether you want to do it or not. To make your decision, you don’t need to know exactly what you want to do with your whole life, but having a little bit of a plan is important. It’s no secret that people are often afraid of being unable to find a job. In many cases, this is why they choose to get a diploma or degree. They see it as a way to guarantee their success in the job market. However, what many people don’t realize is that the most important part of going to university is not the diploma itself but the knowledge and skills you gain while you’re there. After all, anybody can get a fake diploma these days, but nobody can fake the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in your chosen field. So if you’re considering going to university, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. Seek out knowledge and understanding, and let the diploma be just a bonus.
One of the best things that good schools do is set up children the best way. In other words, the children know what they need to do once they leave school. In a sense, you get a fair idea about your interest areas and what you would want to study in terms of making a career out of it. If you apply to an international school, you are pretty much sorted in life. With the best international teachers guiding you, it is impossible not to be guided into what you wish to do for the latter half of your life.
Going to university after leaving school
This is one of the most obvious choices, as most people choose to do after high school. Much of the education system is garnered towards preparing you for life at university. If you are unsure what to study, then perhaps consult a degree finder to help narrow down your options.
To go to university, make sure you are passionate about the subject you want to study in the coming years. It is less important to have a career goal at this point, but it can help if you struggle to choose a degree.
Research areas of work
T some time to research the different types of jobs that are out there. You will be surprised at just how many there are across the industries out there.
Perhaps you already have an idea of something that interests you. Great! If so, channel your research into those areas. If not, you can find out a lot more by researching careers and seeing what you need for them regarding skills and work experience.
Take a personality test
These tests seem silly but can also help you narrow down your choices. There might be a job you have never thought of before that comes out in the results.
Many of these quizzes will provide a general idea of an area you may want to work in based on the fit for your personality. If you look online, you will find plenty of free tests that can help you narrow down your choices and potentially inspire you to a new career.
Get work experience
Before you commit to a career choice, make the most of your time by getting some experience in a relevant area of employment. Doing this before you head to university or decide on a career can help you decide if the field is for you.
Getting some job experience also looks great on the CV. That can help you get a higher job in an industry you are passionate about.
What to do after leaving school?
While it may feel like you must make a decision right now, there is plenty of time when leaving school. There is also plenty of time to choose the wrong things and experiment. Don’t feel pressured to get it right the first time around. Take your time and try and get it right for you.
Great advice! I took several years off, until I got lured into college. Worked for me!
Sometimes a break is needed! xo
An informative post as usual, Christy. There are so many options on what you can do after school. Naturally going to university is an option to study something you like or gain more knowledge in a particular area. Work experience is a good idea too to get hands-on training in industries you are interested in. Hope you are doing well :)
Hi Mabel, how nice to hear from you! The number of options when graduating high school can be overwhelming ~ And sometimes it’s too much… So I’m glad you appreciate the topic xx
What a great topic! Our young people are looking around at the world with some uncertainty and wondering what is best for them. We no longer live in a society where college is the only merit of success… there are so many options out there for them and we must not shame them for being innovative and curious. High schools are becoming better and more equipped to handle and celebrate the many paths to self-actualization. It’s a journey, not a destination… and as long as we continue to strive in building good humans and nurture creativity their opportunities will be endless. Thank you for the post! Sincerely, :) Annie the HS Teacher
I love how you encourage creativity in your comment here ~ Cheers to all the wonderful teachers out there, including you!
