Do you feel as though your mental health has taken a backseat recently? Maybe you just don’t feel as though you are prioritizing it as much as you could be and feel like you need to make a change. Either way, there are things you can do to try and make a change. If you don’t know where to start, this guide will help you.
Talk to Someone
Sometimes the best thing you can do is talk to someone. Talking to someone who you trust, whether it is a friend or even a family member will make you feel better. It also allows you to share what you are going through with someone. If you live in an area that stops you from having a lot of face-to-face interactions, for example, if you live way out of the way or if you can’t just go out to your local coffee shop, then there are ways around this.
You may find that it is easier for you to connect with social media groups instead, or for you to phone a helpline. When you do, you will soon find that it is much easier for you to get the help and support you need. It is also helpful to pinpoint if anything is worrying you, so you can find a solution. If you have a lot of student debt, there are networks out there that can help.
Put your Health First
You also need to try and take care of your physical health too. Taking care of your physical health is often the best way for you to start prioritizing your mental health. Try to walk for at least half an hour every day and take the time to make sure that you are mindful of how the activity is making you feel.
If you have no idea where to start, because fitness isn’t your forte then one thing you can do is try yoga. That will stop you from burning yourself out, and you may find that it helps you to connect to yourself more mindfully too. Check with your doctor for safe physical activities for you.
Do Activities You Love
Try to continue doing any activities that you love, or activities that you find meaningful. It may be that you try to go on a walk or that you try to cook a nice meal. Sometimes, something as simple as playing with your pet or going for a walk in the park is the best way to go.
You can also try to sit back and watch a film or a TV show to have a break. That gives you the headspace you need to connect with yourself once more and it also helps you to have a break from all of the stress that is going on in your life right now.
If you find that you are getting overwhelmed during the day, then one thing you can do is try and take two minutes to just focus on the world all around you. Free yourself from all of the anxiety you are experiencing and reconnect with yourself during this moment in time. You can even download apps to help you with things like this, so try and keep that in mind.
