Gender stereotypes in sport

The sports world has long been male-dominated, but times are changing. Women of all ages are breaking stereotypes and blazing their paths in the world of sports. From Billie Jean King and The Williams sisters bringing power to the tennis courts to Simone Biles lighting the gymnastics mat on fire with her record-breaking routines. And Wilma Rudolph became the first woman to win three gold medals at one Olympic games (Rome 1960). So many inspirational women are forging the path for equality in sports. Let’s keep making waves in these five traditionally male-dominated sports, ladies!

1. Basketball

Women’s basketball in America has a rich history and has come a long way since its inception. The first women’s basketball game was in 1892, just one year after the first men’s game. However, it wasn’t until the 1970s that women’s college basketball began to gain popularity.

Today, more and more women’s basketball teams are appearing across North America and elsewhere. The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is gaining traction, and Canada may get a team soon.

2. Cycling

The best part about cycling is you only need a bike and a helmet. You don’t need to join a club with a monthly membership. You can go whenever and wherever you want. That said, you can join numerous women-only and mixed-gender cycling clubs to get more from this sport.

5. Tennis

Tennis is a game many people enjoy, and women’s tennis professionally is on par with men’s in terms of skills and quality of gameplay. For years, women have led the way on the tennis courts in the big tournaments and grassroots levels where anyone can enjoy the game.

All you need is a comfy pair of shoes, a tennis court, a ball, and a racket, and you’re good to go. You can play in singles or doubles and practice at a pace that suits you, from a fun and fast workout to a leisurely game where you practice your backhand and perfect your serve.

  1. Christy, I love this piece. I wholeheartedly agree that women are breaking the stereotypes when it comes to sports. I am a huge sports fan and can remember when I was younger, barely having a female athlete to look to for inspiration. But now, women are dominating in practically every sport. My all time favorites are Serena Williams and Laila Ali ~ both considered goats (greatest of all time) in their sport.

    1. It’s great to see the women rocking it in the pro and amateur ranks ~ Oooh Laila Ali is awesome, so glad you added her name here, KaLena 🥊❤️ Thank you for being here!
