Interview with author Stevie Turner about her new book, Falling

Stevie Turner is a blogger and author who I have known online for several years. You might remember her from this guest post. When she recently announced the release of her new women’s fiction book Falling, I asked her to come over to tell us more about it. Below is the exclusive interview.

Thanks for being here, Stevie. Congratulations on the new book! You have written 15 novels, 6 novellas, 1 memoir, and 18 short stories – wow!

Please tell us a little more about yourself and your writing background

I’m a British author who has been writing novels since 2013. I also work part-time as a medical secretary.  I’m a cancer survivor and live with my husband in the East of England.

We have two grown sons and five grandchildren. Hubby and I love hiking and cycling on the Isle of Wight, where we have a holiday caravan. Here we are at the Tennyson monument at the top of the cliffs near Freshwater Bay.

How did you come to start writing? Did you intend to become an author?

I’ve been writing since childhood. I once won an inter-schools’ writing competition aged about 11, and never looked back after that!

I started out writing a diary aged about eight and then moved on to poems, short stories, and eventually novels when my sons had left home, and I had more time to write.

Falling recently was an award finalist. Congrats! How did that come about?

I like to submit new manuscripts to the Page Turner Writing Award, which runs once per year. There’s a chance of shortlisted authors getting represented as agents read the manuscripts.

How would you describe the plot of Falling?

James Hynde, fortified by several tots of whiskey, climbs up onto the roof of Parker Mews’ multi-storey car park and peers over the parapet. The game is up. The police will soon seize his millions, the Maserati, the London townhouse, and the Caribbean mansion on Windjammer Island.

Should he jump feet first or hold out his arms and topple over and over like a somersaulting gymnast? He closes his eyes, feels the breeze on his face, and pitches forward into the unknown.

Sixty feet below, Olivia Benet, a budding ballerina, rushes along Parker Mews towards the entrance to the multi-storey. Her interview for the Royal Ballet had taken much longer than expected, and she has but a few short minutes left before her parking ticket expires.

James has no idea of the consequences his action will have on his and Olivia’s lives.

Falling is a women’s fiction, enemies-to-lovers novel.

What research, if any, did you do for this book?

I had to research UK prison visiting procedures online, but other than that I didn’t need to do anything else. I’m lucky in one respect – I’ve worked in a hospital for more than 20 years…

You have written quite a few books. What inspires you to keep writing and publishing?

Writing is a learning curve, and I’ve learned much over the last ten years. I suppose like most authors I keep writing because I enjoy it, it’s a great hobby, and who knows… there may be the chance one day to be represented by a literary agent.

What do you hope readers will get out of Falling?

To be transported temporarily to James and Olivia’s world and to hopefully enjoy the ride.

What do you see as your next writing project?

I’ve started writing another novel in the form of a diary, partly based on true events, which will get me through the dark days of winter.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to write their first book?

Don’t rush to send it off to agents.  Get it critiqued by people who are not friends and family, and listen to their advice. Then re-write it and after you have re-written it and read it through several times then send it off to agents.
