4 kind ways to welcome new neighbors

Welcome new neighbors ideas

Being the new kid on the block isn’t always easy. With the stress of moving, on top of leaving an old life behind, a simple act of kindness can go a long way. Offering new neighbors a welcoming introduction to the neighborhood can make a world of difference when it comes to feeling accepted and supported in your new community. Here are four warm and friendly gestures that you can do to welcome new neighbors.

1. Say “hello”

The first few days of moving into a new place can be pretty overwhelming, so don’t expect a long conversation on day one. A smile and wave from across the street or a brief introduction in passing can make someone feel more welcome. A day or two after they move in, it’s appropriate to swing by to introduce yourself.

If you are looking to introduce yourself to your new neighbors without overstepping or making them feel like they have to take time out of their busy day to socialize, use this welcome tag to hang on their door. Whenever they have a moment to reach out, this welcome tag will encourage them to come to say hello.

2. Give housewarming gifts to welcome new neighbors

Who doesn’t love new housewarming gifts when they move into their home? There are plenty of options to choose from including gift baskets, home-baked goods, or even your favorite dish.

While all of these ideas have great potential, bringing over a bottle of wine is always a safe bet. This avoids possible food allergies or giving something that your neighbors may already have.

You can easily design wine bottle labels with your favorite font on Custom Sticker, write what you want to say, and add patterns you like. It’s a wonderful gift for your new neighbors and an excellent way to let them know your style and personality. And you can have fun designing your own labels for wine bottles. Maybe this would be a good conversation starter for your first meeting or dinner!

3. Recommend local services and attractions

If your new neighbor has moved from somewhere far away, they probably need some relevant information on the local community. Sharing these local town staples with your new neighbor makes them in the know with their new community and they’ll look at you as a trusted resource.

Here are some examples of information to share with your neighbors to make their needs feel supported with resources in your area:

  • Local services: Trusted representatives from lawn care companies, babysitters, car repair shops, dentists, and doctor’s offices will help your neighbor make necessary appointments.
  • Local organizations: Inviting your new neighbors to join fun social groups to get involved with the community will let them feel accepted in their town.
  • Local attractions: Whether there is an upcoming block party, a great new restaurant, or popular parks for your new neighbor to enjoy, share these attractions with your neighbor to give them the best experience in the new area!

While all of this information may be helpful, it can also be hard to remember at first. Offer your neighbor this neighborhood cheat sheet that they can refer to when seeking local advice or direction.

4. Welcome new neighbors with a houseplant pet

Plants can make a home feel a bit cozier and give your new neighbor a small responsibility to look forward to every day. Plants or flowers can liven up any room. What neighbor wouldn’t love cute succulents by their sunny window for all to enjoy?

When giving your neighbor a new house plant, include a plant care tag to help your neighbor keep tabs on their new house pet! Your neighbor can watch their new plant grow taller as they grow accustomed to their new neighborhood thanks to your help!

From acts of service to kind gifts, these kind gestures are great ways to welcome new neighbors to the neighborhood and inspire them to pass the kindness along down the road.

  1. What a sweet post, Christy! You’re absolutely right; even when a move is a welcomed change, it’s still a big change. It’s a whole new chapter in life, a fresh start. To offer a kind gesture during such a transition could really make a big difference. ❤️

I love the welcome tag. What a great idea. I’ve always worried about being intrusive to others, because I don’t care for that kind of “pop-up” visit myself. The tag gives them an opportunity to respond (or not) on their own terms. Much less stressful for both parties involved!

Gift baskets and a plant with care information are definitely ways to make someone feel at home in their new community. Most of all though I love the idea of helping someone who has moved from a distance away to become familiar with what’s available in the new area. It can feel overwhelming to learn it all, as you know!

Sending lots of love your way, sweet Christy. Another very helpful and sweet post. Lots of people are moving right now so this is very timely!
