How to connect with your inner self (and why)

Journal to connect inner self

Between meeting work deadlines, catching up with friends, and checking in with social media so you don’t miss anything, it can feel like there’s no time to recharge. Steffo Shambo, sex and relationship expert and tantra coach, says that trying to keep up with everything else and not being able to find time for yourself can be draining and you will end up in burnout. With many people still adjusting to a pandemic-led world, now is the ideal time to start introspection and allow your true inner self to come to life. But, how do you connect with your inner self in such strange times?

Why connecting with your inner self matters

Firstly, this process makes you feel at one with your being. It will also allow you to understand what you need as an individual in order to feel complete.

In time, understanding more about yourself will help you develop stronger bonds across all your relationships too. That includes friends, family, and romantic partners.

So you may be wondering – how can I get to know your inner self better?

Essentially, getting to know your inner being is all about spending quality time on your own and understanding how you truly feel in different situations. That is, without the pressures of society and work infiltrating your mind.

3 ways to connect with your inner self

Here are some ways to connect with your inner being to feel more alive:

1. Breathing exercises

One way to start the process is to try to implement a little bit of mindful meditation and breathwork into your daily routine. It could be one of the first things you do when waking up in the morning or one of the last things before bedtime.

It doesn’t have to be a long time that you spend doing this, either. Taking just 10 minutes out of the day will have mental health benefits.

During the 10-minute session, practicing breathing techniques will help you ground yourself, making it easier for you to get to know yourself better than before. When you have so many things on the to-do list, you might not realize how much pent-up energy you have inside.

These exercises help release excess energy. That lets your inner self come through a little more.

2. Journaling

Another way to connect with your inner being is to practice journaling. Keep a notebook to jot your thoughts down at the end of each day. Just let everything in your mind out on paper.

Many people find this practice quite freeing, helping connect with your inner self. As you get more comfortable with the process, you may want to write more!

For those who tend to be anxious or struggle to settle down at the end of the day, writing everything down will also allow you to see things from an outside perspective. It might help you let things go with more ease than usual.

3. Try yoga

One more great option to get the internal positive energies flowing is to do yoga. You can personalize this practice to what you like and feel comfortable doing for positions. Don’t feel like if you have to do a headstand!

Yoga is all about understanding the movements of your body. It’s a great way to find balance in connecting your mind and inner self.

Interested in yoga? How to start

Start off with basic flows, such as a daily Surya Namaskar. These movements help to energize your body at the beginning of the day.

Once you become more confident in your practice, try the more intricate and tantra-oriented exercises of Hatha Yoga. These techniques include purifications of the body, mind, and soul.

One of the main practices within Hatha yoga is Nauli Kriya, a purification of the abdomen. The benefits of Nauli Kriya are immense!

It is great for cleansing your system and helping you feel grounded. It can also activate inner energies which make you feel alive and refreshed!

Concluding thoughts on connecting with the inner self

Overall, getting to know your inner being is really just about getting to know yourself and activating different energy. This energy has always existed inside you, although you may not have had access to it before.

In today’s world, it can be difficult to find time for yourself. However, once you put aside some me-time and focus on clearing your mind for inner peace. You will feel more energized, more adventurous, and ready to conquer any obstacles that may come your way.

  1. Excellent post Christy. Having added these three things to my life over the past decade has been life-changing. Thanks for sharing in such a concise and meaningful way.

    1. Not bad for a person my age. I am dedicating March toward making up doctors appts and tests missed b/c of Covid and getting healthier, physically too.
