On Kamala Harris’ historic win

Kamala Harris

What a start to November! I was like many of you on the edge of my seat wondering what the American election results would bring in. Was I surprised by the number of votes for Trump? Yes. Was I happy with the election results? Also a yes! Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the win! In particular, this is an amazing moment in US history.

Kamala Harris made history

Wow. On November 7th, Kamala became the first female in the US to be vice president-elect. She is also the first black woman to take this position and the first South-Asian woman to do so.

While I believe those firsts are coming later in history than I would have preferred, I am still joyous for this momentous occasion to have occurred nonetheless. There has yet to be a female president in the White House but I hope that that time will come very soon.

Harris was already amazing for being Joe Biden’s VP pick and the only Black woman in the Senate. She is only the third woman to be selected as vice president on a major party ticket. The other two were Sarah Palin and Geraldine Ferraro.

What this moment symbolizes

It means a lot on so many levels. Firstly, Kamala Harris will represent many groups that have historically been underrepresented when it comes to political power. She takes on a role that will inspire and be the voice for many women who previously have not been heard.

She will also stand up for women of color and those who identify with more than one race. For those who are in the US or any other country in the world, seeing Kamala Harris holding such an important political position is inspirational. When you see yourself in her, you see the possibilities and what you can do too.

You see hope for the future, especially when it is needed after Trump’s backwards path that has so many wrongs, including misogyny. There is hope for acceptance and equality in gender, race, and ethnicity.

Hopefully Biden and Harris will also be able to take strides to combat the rise of COVID-19 cases across the US. As I am Canadian, I also hope to see positive relations with our country and the US under the new leadership.

More to come for Harris and the country

To quote Kamala on Twitter recently, “We have a lot of work ahead of us, Let’s get started.”

  1. Thanks for the excellent article Christy.

I particularly liked your comment and the way you phrased: “While I believe those firsts are coming later in history than I would have preferred, I am still joyous for this momentous occasion to have occurred nonetheless. There has yet to be a female president in the White House but I hope that that time will come very soon.”

I hope you have a great week!

  2. Excellent post, and good to learn more about Harris. (Including her also being the only black woman in the Senate). I think Biden and Harris are a good duo… and much needed, especially given certain societal behaviors such as racism and misogyny. It’s time to start changing things for once and all, right?. Thanks for this post, dear CB. Much love across the miles 😘👋♥️
