Home window care and cleaning

Window care, maintenance

When it comes to caring for the home, it’s easy to overlook certain parts of it. However, this can end up biting you in the behind later. If you don’t take pay attention to window care now, for example, then they can become not only a health risk by welcoming mold and dirt into the home, but they can quit being good at their job too. That leaves the home and your family within it more exposed to the elements. To help prevent that from happening, here is a guide for proper home window maintenance.

Check for leaks

If you’re concerned about the indoor air quality in your home, then you want to make sure that air from the outside world can’t just come in and circulate as it pleases. For that reason, at least once a year (or sooner if you feel a draught), take the time to check around the window for any air leaks.

If you’re uncertain about whether or not you feel one, you can hold a loose leaf of paper against it to see if it is sucked flush or flutters. If either is the case, then it’s likely best to caulk it up.

Window care: Why cleaning is vital

It’s essential you take the time to wipe down the windows, glass, and frame, with a slightly damp cloth to remove the dust that starts to gather. Glass cleaner can also help.

Windows are often on the last of the list when it comes to cleaning and maintaining the home. But they also require equal importance to prevent future problems and potential health risks. A damp cloth may remove dust, but it may not be sustainable or enough to keep the windows in pristine condition for a longer time. Besides maintaining a fresh look, having clean windows allows more sunlight. It makes your home brighter and energy-efficient by maximizing natural light.

You can hire professional window cleaners to get the job done, but you’ll end up saving more in the long run by having your own window cleaning products and tools. Keeping the windows clean is a fairly easy and simple chore that you can do on your own when you have time for it. Proper sponges, scrubbers, and soap can remove spots and dirt even up to the tightest corners.

If you have a home of more than one story or simply want to make sure you’re giving your windows the care they need, you should rely on local window cleaning services too. This stops dirt, dust, and mold from building up, maintaining a healthy home.

Paint and seal

Both wooden and metal window frames needed to be repainted every few years to make sure that they’re protected against the elements (as well as keeping their curb appeal.) For wooden frames, you also need to look at what kind of wood sealants you might need.

These have to be stripped and reapplied every time you paint the window, to make sure that the wood retains its moisture repelling properties. Otherwise, they can start to rot.

Window care involves getting an inspection

Not all issues with your windows are quite so easy to spot. Some can lurk under the surface. This is quite literally the case with moisture in double-paned windows, a sign of failure that’s all too easy to miss. If you find any of these issues during an inspection, then it might be time to look for replacement windows.

Don’t let damage linger

Any glass damage in your window should be taken care of by a professional as soon as possible. You don’t know when a small crack can suddenly turn into a big one, and this can compromise the security of your home in a big way.

Similarly, if you need a replacement lock or other component, it’s best to replace them as soon as possible. Damage to those parts can spread to other mechanisms, as well as leaving the window open to rust in its metal components.

Concluding words on window care

Window maintenance isn’t just about helping them look good (though it definitely does that too.) It also helps you save money in the long-run.

  1. Hi Christy,

We have found some of those commercial sprays that attach to a hose to be quite effective when it comes to outdoor window washing. They can reach second story windows. Your tips about window care maintenance are good ones.
