How to find your purpose: Strategies here

Alexis Walker stops by to share 4 strategies for how to find your purpose. It’s about seeing beyond today’s errands and looking instead at a bigger picture of why you’re really “here.” Alexis offers creative ways to discover that “why.”

There comes a time in most of our lives when we feel like we are going nowhere. Either we’re stuck in the same routine with no real passion or finding ourselves dissatisfied and less than happy with where we are and what we’re doing.

Indeed, feeling like you have a purpose is not something that all of us can brag about, but something that is important in order to feel fulfillment. Some research even goes as far as saying that those with a passion and purpose live a healthier, longer life. But it’s not easy to find the thing that will drive you forward. Thankfully, there are some tips to help you find it.

Stop and Think

The first step towards how to find your purpose is stopping for a second and evaluating where you stand and what you have already. If your thoughts don’t seem to come together, try to help them gain a form by writing them down in a journal. Try to find the answer to questions like these ones:

  • When were you happiest so far in your life?
  • What brings you joy?
  • How about pride?
  • What do you like about other people?
  • What do you love and what do you feel thankful for?

All of this introspection can help you draw some conclusions. That’s why it’s the first suggestion on how to find your purpose in life.

Rediscover Your Passions and Interests

While thinking and journaling, try to list all the things you enjoy doing simply for the sake of it. That is, without any kind of material reward, such as money.

Is it cooking delicious dishes and seeing your whole family enjoying them? Is it organizing all of your travels yourself? Or perhaps something creative such as playing an instrument or doing art?

Revisit old hobbies you gave up because of lack of time and analyze them. That way, you will get a better picture of both what you’re good at and what brings you both joy and fulfilment. It’s a good starting point that can even lead to a new career.

For instance, in Australia, countless small businesses spring up each year and many of them were born out of a single person’s idea and effort. If you really feel unsatisfied in your current position, venturing into this field is also an option.

Use Physical Activity to Find Your Purpose

For self-discovery, you certainly have to push your limits. You don’t know what you might be capable of until you try, after all. That’s why turning to physical activities to answer the question of how to find your purpose can be a good idea.

While many people take up running for the fitness benefits or to compete with others, try to think about this activity as a competition with your own self instead. Reaching new milestones can give you a sense of fulfilment and the feeling that you’re going somewhere.

Similarly, taking up martial arts training in Sydney will teach you so much more than the basic kicks and punches. Not to mention how your physical efforts will inspire those around you!

Think on a Wider Scale But Make the Small Things Count

Think about what kind of change you want to see in the world. This activity can give you a good idea about what you can do to improve the current situation.

And, while you certainly can’t turn the whole world around, all the small things that you are able to do can indeed mean something special to individual people. And THAT can be an amazing purpose in itself.

Concluding Words on How to Find Your Purpose

Finally, there is no single path to discovering your purpose. However, once you get an idea of what you want to do, you will naturally have the motivation to work towards being a better version of yourself and share this with others, inspiring them along the way.

Remember too that you don’t have to follow other people’s definition of a fulfilled life. Many people fall into the mistake of thinking about social norms and expectations before their own wants and needs. You don’t have to settle for a 9-5 job if it makes you unhappy. Keep trying out new things and you will surely find something that will bring both satisfaction and happiness into your life.

  1. Thank you for hosting Alexis on your blog, Christy! An enlightening article! What I teach in the university leisure education curriculum is finding passion in something, as well as revisiting old hobbies and definitely exploring new ones. Using the time for physical activity or leisure to boost endorphins, gain clarity and spark creativity is a win all around.

  3. Great article! To find your purpose, it is always useful to revisit your childhood interests.
Because children are fearless, unaffected by social pressures and unaware of social norms.
Because when we’ve grown up, we have forgotten our purpose or have given up on our vision.

    1. Those social pressures can certainly build over the years! The thoughtful comment is appreciated.
