Overcoming Personal Barriers for a Healthier Life

A healthier life includes self-care

While you probably are well aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, like many other busy people you may make self-care a low priority. Yes, the well-being of your family is important, as are your career and home. But it’s not in your or your family’s best interests to continue putting yourself so far below other responsibilities. If you’re coming up with all sorts of reasons why you can’t change the way you live, then it’s time to change your thinking. See them as the excuses they really are. And find ways to manage your day so that self-care becomes a priority instead of an afterthought. A healthier life awaits you!

Not enough time for a healthier life

Probably the most common reason for failing to live a healthier life is lack of time. These two excuses might sound familiar: no time to go to the gym, or not enough hours in the day to cook meals from scratch. The truth is that everyone has exactly the same amount of time each day to fit in all the activities they need to do. It’s just that some are better at managing their time than others.

Have a look at your schedule. See if you can find times when you could rearrange what you’re doing to free up some time. There are many ways to find extra time, you just may not have thought of them yet. For example instead of spending 40 minutes driving the round trip to the gym for an hour’s workout, why not hop on your bicycle and go for a forty-minute bike ride? That amounts to an instant savings of an hour and you still get in exercise time. Use your time wiser!

Not enough willpower

When you’re tired after a day spent working and taking care of your kids, all you want to do is collapse on the couch. It’s much easier to order takeout or microwave a meal than it is to cook. But think about the effects of not eating well. For example, your unbalanced diet could be part of the reason you’re so tired every night.

If you don’t have regular, nutritious meals, you can find yourself craving sugar and giving in to the urge to snack on junk food. Don’t trap yourself in a cycle of poor food choices and energy fluctuations. You need to find ways to incorporate healthy living into your schedule. For instance, why not start cooking with the kids? You’ll spend time together, plus they learn important life skills, and you all enjoy making and eating the meal.

The less time spent on yourself, the more your health and well-being will suffer. And that in turn makes life even harder. Stop making excuses as to why you can’t take action to improve your health. Instead, make an honest appraisal of how you’re living. Look for smart ways to find the time and motivation to make some positive changes for a healthier life. Take time for self-care.

  1. Great advice, Christy! Sometimes I “trick” myself and my family into eating healthier, by ensuring fresh produce that’s already washed, cut, and prepared to eat or throw in what I’m cooking is front and center in the fridge, or out on the counter. That way my family is less likely to go looking for junk food.

  2. A healthier life is a personal choice. You bring up a god point on terms of planning. If we can just set aside a bit of time, we can take steps to a healthier us. I didn’t use to have much of a healthier breakfast before work, just two slices of bread. These days I take some a few more minutes to put some cheese on top and that makes for a more nutietious meal.

    1. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day too because it sets your metabolism going – sounds like you’re on the right path, dear Mabel! :)

  3. Nice post Christy,

yes, people don’t have a time for their life, but they have time for their pats:) I love animals, don’t get me wrong !
