How Music Can Heal and Promote Hope

Songs can give you hope.

Every civilization usually has some sort of music attached to it. Crude types of musical instruments have been uncovered in ancient archaeology digs. Simple bells from a long ago Asian culture attest to this people group’s need for getting in touch with their spiritual side. Native Americans used wooden drums topped with animal skins to signify a buffalo hunt, warn of intruders, induce trances for inner reflection and to provide a lively beat for the tribe dances and celebrations. Music is still important to different groups of people located around the globe. Some believe that music has the power to heal and to promote hope even in troubling times.

Access to music in urban areas might be limited. Many residents living in cities do not have the extra money to purchase musical instruments or to take piano lessons or hire a voice coach. This is sad when one thinks about young children being deprived of the beauty that music is known to provide. Hope is often fleeting in neighborhoods where gang violence is prevalent. Many city school districts have cut music education and other arts programs from the curriculum due to lack of enough educational funding.

When people lose hope for their futures, living can seem dismal and dim. Humans are adaptable to their environment, and today many individuals with a musical talent can be seen singing for money on the city sidewalks. It is common for individuals to provide impromptu music and/or dance concerts in underground subway stations and inside of a city park region. This type of activity perfectly describes how music can motivate people to feel again.

Individuals have different preferences in the music that they desire to hear. You might enjoy Broadway musical tunes, soaring opera notes, classical instrumental, dance music, or emotion invoking rap songs.

Music is a way for individuals to show their more personal sides. So-called grunge music often has angry lyrics and a strong pounding beat. Swing dance music was popular in generations past. Today’s music covers everything from country tunes, classic rock, folk music and southern style jazz and blues. Some music enthusiasts have taken action to make music accessible to urban dwellers. These musical artists can be found at community centers or inner city schools giving free concerts and offering music lessons. Others are urged to donate piano NYC.

  11. Great post, Christy. It is interesting that music is also used for developmental therapy. My sister who had her 30 1/2 week-year-old twin boys undergo music therapy (Mozart) to help in their development. “The Brain’s Way of Healing” by Norman Doidge, M.D. is an interesting book that highlights ways senses including hearing music can change the brain. Music is basic to human nature and should be nurtured. Have a wonderful week.
