Environmental damage has been one of the hottest social topics of recent generations. The human race has put the future of our planet as we know it at great risk with irresponsible activities. Sadly, the growing population only makes those threats even greater. However, there are signs that we are finally starting to regain control.
A number of factors have contributed to our growing authority in the war to keep the planet in good health. While there is a still long way to go, here are some of the main reasons we can start to feel more optimistic.
Research Has Evolved
Given its importance, it’s no surprise to learn that billions have been invested into finding ways to combat the problems. You can find in-depth info on the various aspects at Stateofgreen.com. It’s safe to say it covers everything from energy use to sustainable food sources. Compared to where we were 20 years ago, the landscape is in a far better position.
As the understanding of those alternatives grows, the solutions spread to new territories too. In turn, the positive results are being seen in many countries and industries. Frankly, the damage reached a level where something had to be done. Thankfully, humanity is responding in a positive manner.

The Incentives are Plentiful
Research offers a great starting point, but it can only achieve so much. To overcome the massive obstacles, it’s important for everyone to play their part. Going green is a great way to actively save money, and this incentive is more than enough for most. After all, if a few changes around the home can allow you to enjoy a better quality of life, it has to be worth the investment.
For businesses, the prospect of a better company image is another huge source of motivation. Essentially, knowing that you’re helping the earth and future generations is great. Still, whether it’s selfish or not, the individual benefits need to be present too. Given the growing affordability of most eco-friendly items, the situation is looking better than ever.
It’s Now Cool
Appearances are everything in this world. It wasn’t that long ago that most eco-friendly products were seen as both “geeky” and “showing off” by most people. However, those situations have changed massively in recent times.
More people are now living off the grid, and others are taking note in a good way. Making use of solar power can help the planet and keep costs affordable for you at home too.
The car industry is the perfect example. The Whatcar.com list of best hybrid cars underlines the growing popularity, and electric cars are going the same way. This can only encourage people to join the revolution.
On a similar note, people can now take immense pride in using business services that operate in a responsible manner. Whether it’s fashion, food, or something else doesn’t matter. Those changes to public perceptions have played a massive role. As the popularity grows, the hopes of making further strides forward in the ongoing battle look brighter than ever.
As such, there’s never been a better time for people of all backgrounds to finally get behind the eco-friendly movement.

I love your last point – because that means that we’ve finally reached our “hundredth monkey” – the tipping point where enough of us know something and take it seriously that *most* folks know about it and do so as well.
It emboldened me to leave yet ANOTHER voicemail for Gaslight Management here in Cincinnati reminding them that my apartment building has no Recycling Cans – my third reminder this week alone (and I’ve been complaining regularly since May!).
I’m sure the term “environmentally irresponsible” won’t mean much to them as they listen to my voicemail, but wondering if it is actually a law for Landlords to provide them just might!!

When are people going to wake up and see that every day that goes by can make a difference – whether it be environmental, societal, or on another level? Thanks for your concern, Christy. Everyone in my 6 unit building besides me is a college student – the majority from India, sharing these very large apartments and splitting the rent. Very friendly, but different cultural expectations, I suppose. They seem not to know that cardboard is not garbage – and they get frequent deliveries from Amazon, etc.
In any case, I seem to be the ONLY person this bothers – this or anything else (like the overhead light out, leaving the entryway in the dark for weeks now, which WAS finally replaced tonight).
I pay over a thousand dollars a month for this “luxury” dwelling, btw. The apartment itself is lovely, but lousy maintenance has been an issue in one way or another for as long as I’ve lived here.
My call last night STILL has not been responded to, nor do we have our recycling cans well past the time their office is closed today. Had to take my recycling to a nearby building also owned by Cincinnati Gaslight, finding multiple recycling cans but only ONE garbage can – same problem, of course, with garbage and recycling mixed, so it ALL ends up in a landfill.
I believe I commented on an earlier post that Gaslight holds periodic contests for a free month’s rent in exchange for reviews on FB. They have an undeserved reputation as wonderful landlords since the kids leave raves from each occupant (multiple buildings), hoping to increase their chances.
I am not prepared to move right now, so there’s only so much I am willing to do until I can afford to hire movers (along with the other moving expenses and the time away from working on making a living to make it happen). I am way too “mature” to manage it alone without killing myself – lol – and I doubt my life would recover from being forced out suddenly or a court fight.
CRAZY, huh? And very sad.

I am disappointed in the building management for not getting their act together regarding recycling and for also falling behind in maintenance, which you help pay for and is not meeting your needs. Frustrating times indeed! I’m wishing I was there to help you move to somewhere more in line with your values. I cannot begin to tell you how much you mean to me and I wish I could make it better.. It’s too bad some things cannot be mandated better property-wise!

One interesting thing that happened about 10 years ago were questions an investment counselor asked me. “What companies will you invest in? Will you invest in tobacco? Will you invest in companies that heavily pollute? Do you want a portfolio that is tied to your ideals, or do you care?”
Well, I bet I could have made more money if I didn’t care. Maybe that will change now. Point is: our choices can make a difference.
I like that term you used Resa: “eco-geeking” :) Did you make that up – if so, coin it now! It’s all about values, as you say, including how we decide to spend or invest our money. I wish more people thought about their decisions as deeply as you do <3 Yes, good timing for this post with it being the 13th – you're the only one to catch that so far!

I’m one of those who thought people was ‘showing off’ when they recycle. Lol
Now I understand they are just people who care about the Higher good.
