Being health conscious in business: How to do your bit

Health conscious business

When it comes to being healthy, it’s not always easy to feel motivated in yourself to stay healthy! Even when you know you have to take care of yourself, it’s easy to let it fall to the bottom of your to-do list. Especially when you’re a busy person. For this very reason, it’s always a good idea to find new ways of feeling motivated whenever you can. And one of the best ways that you can keep yourself inspired, and help to motivate others, is to bring health and fitness into the workplace. If you own your own business, here’s what you could do to be more health conscious in business.

Host well-being days

The first thing to think about is hosting a well-being day or two throughout the year. Employee wellness programs are quickly becoming a huge part of a business’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. Because businesses care about their employees.

And if you know that your staff can get stressed out at work, hosting a well-being day should be a lot of fun. With massages, time out for breaks, and refreshments, you should be able to show that physical and mental health are priorities.

Being health conscious in business: Hold a sports day

If you want to bring a bit of fun into the workplace for a day and show off just how important health and fitness are, think about hosting a sports day at work. It could be entirely for fun with things like sack races and egg and spoon races.

Or, maybe it’s a little more competitive than that with athletics-style events. Either way, you will be able to drum up some excitement and encourage your employees to get themselves ready for the big day.

Start a sports team

If you do host a sports day and your staff enjoys it, or you want to do something that people can commit to, why not think about starting a sports team? This can not only encourage your team morale but inspire people to stay fit too.

It can even be fun. With custom basketball jerseys or football shirts, or whatever sport you choose. You’ll get to make it a big deal and a lot of fun for everyone involved.

Provide a gym membership

A lot of people will be interested in the benefits that they can get from a job when they first apply. And health and fitness benefits are certainly always up there.

You might find that you’re able to express the importance of health by providing a gym membership to a local gym for your staff. If you don’t have the budget to provide the entire gym pass, consider offering a discount on the monthly or annual price to staff.

Stock up on healthy stuff

You might also want to set an example with health by how you operate in the office. A great way to do this is to stock up on healthy refreshments.

Instead of candy bars and coffee, why not provide your employees with juices and flavored waters and even get a fruit and vegetable box subscription too. Health drinks are one of the top trends. By providing these things, you’re helping the team stay hydrated and eat well in the workplace.

  1. Where I used to work before I took on my caring role; used to hold two weeks per year for wellbeing. One tied in with Mental Health Awareness week here in the UK and the other was later in the year and included yoga sessions, mini massages, webinars on health topics etc. These are great for the weeks they are being held but difficult to continue afterwards when work pressures and deadlines loom. We forget how important self care really is. Another great post Christy x

    1. You’re right that it can be easy for the “invisible” stuff like self-care to slide down the scale in priority.. thanks Dawn for all you’ve done to support health during those weeks you’ve described. Do take care xx

    2. So true Christy, very easy to forget about caring for yourself when caring for others. Even just taking an hour out for yourself makes a huge difference to how you feel within yourself xxx

  2. Health is very important in a company — both the physical and mental health of the workers.

Our ATL team goes to the gym together; and our Vegas and ATL team often meet-up around the country for hikes. We did Red Rock Canyon, Torrey Pines and Lone Mountain…just to name a few from this year.

Our graphic designer in Jamaica naturally keeps fit at the beach. We all want to switch places with her.
