Eye Spy: Easy Ways to Protect Your Eyes

Don't take eye health for granted

When you hear people talking about their health, it’s common to focus on eating well and being active, but being healthy doesn’t stop here. There are lots of vital organs and systems you need to protect, including your eyes. If you want to do more to protect your eyes, here are some simple tips to embrace in the coming days.

Why protect your eyes?

Your eyes are incredibly important and valuable. They give you the ability to see the world in all its glory and to communicate with others and appreciate what’s around you. We often take our sight for granted and don’t give eye care a second thought.

Book an eye test

When was the last time you had your eyes tested? When you’re young, you tend to have regular tests, but as you grow older, it’s common to go for years without paying optometrists a visit. The trouble with avoiding routine eye tests is that it can take a long time for your vision to change or deteriorate. This means that you may not notice any difference until your symptoms become advanced. You may experience headaches as a result of straining to read, for example.

If you go for an eye test on a regular basis, any minor issues can be corrected before they become more serious. If your vision has got slightly worse, your optometrist will be able to adjust your lenses to make it easier for you to see.

Wear sunglasses

It’s summer, and although this is wonderful for many reasons, it’s not always good news for your eyes. Exposure to sunlight can damage your eyes. If you are going out in the sun, make sure you wear sunglasses and avoid staring straight at the sun. Check that the lenses are strong enough to withstand UV rays and buy shades that meet safety standards.

Use eye care software

If you have a desk job or you spend hours every day staring at a screen, look into buying eye care software. Spending long periods of time in front of a computer can cause your eyes to become tired, and you may find that you’re more prone to headaches. If you do use a monitor or a laptop, eye care software can help to protect your eyes by neutralizing blue light emitted by the screen.

It’s also advisable to take regular breaks, stay hydrated, look away from the screen, and stare into the distance every 10-20 minutes. It’s best to set your desk up so that the monitor is slightly below eye level.

Take advice on board

It’s amazing how many people choose to ignore advice from professionals and try and soldier on without wearing contact lenses or reading glasses. If you’ve been advised to wear glasses for reading or driving or you need them all the time, make sure you wear them.

We often take our health for granted, and we don’t realize how important it is until it’s too late. If you’re keen to preserve your eyesight and protect your eyes for as long as possible, follow these simple steps.

  1. Hi Christy, I just saw your article and I’m also doing a campaign especially for Millenials, to be proactive in protecting their eyes and reduce digital eye strain. Like you said, nowadays, people always know their problems but ignore the advice from professionals or even don’t realize how important the issue is. So this activity is trying to ‘push’ the public take care of themselves. If you get interested, feel free to follow my website and other social media. I really appreciate for your participating! —— XY

    1. I’m glad you find the post helpful and I’ll be checking out your blog this week. I’ve connected on Twitter. Cheers to good health!

  2. Such a great post! I’m grateful for my vision every day. I”ve had many eye problems and very strong bifocals. If I didn’t check my eyes annually, I”d be legally blind now. I had pressure built up behind both retinas and had laser surgery where they lasered in a pinhole in each of my irises to relieve the pressure. My eye dr. sent me to a specialist when she noticed it, while I couldn’t have known otherwise. I was told I would have been completely blind in both eyes within a year. Ya, I’m a walking miracle, lol. :) xxx

    1. You really are a miracle.. and you’re sharing so much with us all through your writing, comments, and sweet presence xx Love you, Debby!

  3. Christy, I spent seventeen years working as a licensed optician in my previous career, and still maintain a current license. I can agree with everything you wrote, but would like to emphasize, sun protection should be worn year round, not just in the summer time. The glare you pick up from snow can reflect harmful UV rays back into your eyes, and be just as bad as the sun on a hot day for them. Ideally sunglasses will have 100 percent UV protection, and the best kind for your eyes are polarized, though polarized lenses can interfere with your ability to see the text on a smart phone or tablet.

    1. Great point about the glare from sun and snow ~ Thank you for the valuable additional information here, Amy! I appreciate all of your reads. Your time is precious and knowing you spent it here means a lot xx

  4. Good point and so true! I always but the very BEST sunglasses I can afford too. I like Maui Jim’s (because they also sell the kind with a bifocal lens!)

  5. How serendipitous, Christy. I’ve been meaning to make an eye dr. appt. (the best intentions…) but haven’t gotten around to it. Thanks for the reminder! And I didn’t know that it’s best to set the monitor slightly below eye level. I always learn something new from your posts ♥

  6. When we think of health I do only think of strength and the physical parts of my body. I rarely think of eyes, fingers, and all the other little limbs on board that are vital to my overall well being. Thank you for the post. Keep it the great work. Wonderful, like always! 😁
