Weekly Inspiration Roundup, Volume 1

Inspiring reads from bloggers

Happy Friday, all! I am rolling out a new feature, which is an inspiration roundup. I plan to publish a selection of posts once a week that I’ve read on other blogs that I find particularly meaningful. The WordPress community is publishing pretty amazing things and I would love to share some of it with all of you, in addition to sharing many of the posts on Twitter. I hope you find this weekly feature to be useful. It’ll publish on Fridays. I can always tweak it along the way ;) Without further ado…

Olga Reviews Teagan Geneviene’s Three Things Serial Story

Author and translator Olga Núñez Miret reviews the book Three Things Serial Story: A Little 1920s Story by Teagan Geneviene on her blog. As per Olga,

Many of the readers of [Teagan’s] blog had asked her to publish the serials in book format and finally, she obliged.

Anybody reading the description of this volume will get a sense of how it came into being. The story has a wonderful sense of time (the jazzy 1920s, brilliant, young, full of flappers, parties, movies, and excitement) and it is told in the first person by Pip, a young woman transplanted from the South to the big city, with a huge imagination and an endless curiosity that gets her involved in all kinds of adventures, including but not limited to: kidnappings, rides in fire trucks, romances, secret coded messages, international intrigues, hidden treasures… Pip also has a wonderful turn of phrase (she never swears, at least not as we understand it, and there is no bad language in the book, although she uses her own expressions that colour her language and readers will come to love) and believes she is a very modern woman, although she is less savvy and cool than she would like to believe.

The Three Things Serial is on my tablet, and I also follow Teagan’s Books blog, which is known for its fun tales. I hope you’ll join her at the blog too.

Perennial Women Discussion with D.G. Kaye

And here’s another blog post to check out. It’s by D.G. Kaye, and it’s a keeper! The post, titled Aging and Wisdom – The New Perennial Age of Women, discusses the aging process and how women in their 40s and 50s are sometimes called “perennials.” I hadn’t heard that term before for females! As per D.G. (Debby),

I can identify with this wonderful choice of word, perennial, representing a time period of continuation of our evolving. We are still evolving and learning and doing. Every year we bloom with more knowledge from our experiences and eventually, the new bloom leads to desires of the ‘me time’. A time for us to focus on the things we enjoy whether it be travel, new hobbies, furthering our education, or even writing books.

Aha, a new age for women and I’m about to enter it in, oh, just over a year. I’m excited for the next phase of my life, which I think is why D.G. Kaye’s post really appealed to me. Plus, it’s nice to think of female aging like the lovely blooming of a flower rather than focusing on the wrinkles, etc. We’re more than our outer appearances, so much more!

‘D’ Writes about Black Girl Magic

This write from “D” of the cocobymonthlypress blog is beautiful on many levels. From a poem to a prose style of writing, the post is about being a black girl who refuses to be defined or put into a box. It is about magic, lifestyle, and embracing who you are, no matter your race, gender, sexuality, or any other attribute. In Quirky or Cosmic: An Ode to Soft, Magic, Nerdy, Alternative Black Girls, D says,

I’ll put color in my hair, I’ll read my comics, dress up as She-Hulk, write my stories, read about technology, date a white, date an asian boy, date whomever I please, and all the while I’m still black.

All the while I and all the other black girls who embrace themselves and their loves are still cosmic.

The world is all the better for these kinds of blog posts. Plus, we all know I love poetry, so this one was a hit from the start. Poetry + female empowerment = this post is on my list as a keeper. Head over to D’s blog to read the post in full.

OK, that’s the scoop this week. Thanks for taking time here and for checking out some of these blogs that offer inspirational reads. Enjoy your weekend!

♥ Christy
