Getting fit as a couple: Improving health for two!

getting fit as a couple

Many people find it harder to keep on top of their health when they’re in a relationship. A lot of the work people do to get fit and stay that way is in the pursuit of finding someone, so once they become part of a romantic couple, it doesn’t feel like there’s much point anymore. But, in reality, your health and fitness are important no matter what is your relationship status. It’s a lot easier to reach health-related goals when you’re getting fit as a couple. Here’s how to do exactly that!

Getting fit as a couple

To start, you can’t consider yourself to be healthy unless a doctor tells you so. Most people don’t know enough about the human body to make a judgement like this about themselves.

So, you should go to see a medical professional at least once every six months. This will give you a chance to ask them about your improvements.

And, what you could be doing to make yourself even fitter. Having someone else to do this with will make it a lot easier; just book the appointments for around the same time on a particular day.

Exercise contributes a bit part of the efforts you have to make to be fit. Without exercise, your body isn’t able to work at its peak.

Your organs will be weaker than they ought to be, which can cause serious issues in later life. A lot of people find it much easier to keep fit when they have a gym buddy.

Being in a relationship with someone gives you a perfect chance to start a routine with them. Once you have a gym buddy when you exercise, you’ll find it much harder to stop exercising because of lack of motivation.

Like exercise, your diet also plays a massive part in your fitness and health. Unfortunately, though, getting into a relationship isn’t the best time to start dieting.

A lot of people like to experiment with new foods with a new partner. And, doing so will make it hard for you to keep a sensible eating plan. Of course, always allow yourself the occasional treat!

But, even when dating, it’s important to make sure you eating healthy. When working with someone else on something like this, it can be a good help to establish some rules before you start. With both of you working on something together, it will be harder to stop doing it.

In the bedroom

Now, it’s time to think about an aspect of health that people rarely consider when they first become part of a couple. Unfortunately, intimate times with your partner are some of the riskiest for your health.

A lot of people don’t realize it but sexual intercourse is one of the biggest spreaders of disease in the world. With most people, you’ll be completely safe. But, with others, it could be worth using some contraceptives to keep you safer.

For the first few weeks with them, use a condom. And, from there, options such as long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) might be appropriate; it’s a “set and forget” form of contraception that can last months or years, depending on what is chosen.

Always speak with your doctor first though as to whether it’s right for you. Every person’s body is different and you need to be aware of any associated risks.

When it comes to pregnancy, it’s worth waiting until you’re completely prepared for a baby. Then, if you decide to have a child, you can look at your options.

Also, take time to educate yourself about issues like toxic shock syndrome and urinary tract infections (UTIs) when you start being intimate with someone, whether it’s a relationship or not. Failing to use the toilet after intercourse can result in these problems, for example, even when you’re healthy in other areas.

Do some research to make sure you understand exactly what different issues, such as urinary tract infections can result from sex. These small considerations can make the future a lot easier, both as a couple and individually. And, it’s usually very easy to avoid problems. So, it’s worth thinking through all of them before you decide to go unprotected.

Using each other as a resource

As a couple, you have one of the greatest resources out there: each other. You have two people to remember what to do.

So, you won’t be forgetting your morning-after pills or your gym sessions each day. Plus, working out with someone else can provide a huge amount of motivation when exercising.

It gives you someone to compare results with, for example. It also gives you someone to help you along the way.

People will often give themselves days off when they’re working out alone. But, a day off can quickly become a week.

And, a week can become forever. It’s much harder to let someone else down than it is to let yourself down; that’s a big part of why it’s helpful to have a gym partner.

In a lot of cases, working with your partner will also trigger some healthy competition. This sort of competition will usually revolve around the results you achieve.

Challenging your loved one to a race or a weight loss competition will make you both work a lot harder. And, this will give you better results as a couple and separately.

But, be careful. This added pressure could take the fun away for your partner or both of you. So, always make sure nothing is too serious.

Instead, only pick on small things that are easily changed. Someone can’t help it if they’re simply not as fast or strong as you.

  1. This is so important. My husband is often traveling, but when he is around, we try to either go to the gym and go on the treadmill or do weights together. Sometimes I can convince him to come to yoga with me. In nice weather, we enjoy taking walks places to get coffee or even a meal. Taking care of our health together is very important.

  2. Wise advise. Often when we’re in a caretaking situation we tend to put the other before ourselves. I know I do this with my husband. But we have to remember to take care of ourselves to be strong enough to take care of others. <3

    1. By not keeping ourselves strong, we are ironically doing a disservice to ourselves, which is what we’re trying to avoid… All so ironic, right?! Your husband is lucky to have you, Debby!

  3. It is not a bad subject to talk about Diet and Exercising. It has to be done as I see so many over-weighted women around me every day. And I think dear you you must start looking at yourself. Young girls dressed to show more of their stomach than their head .. So what are they thinking about. Not about happiness, not about having self consciousness or giving love to others .We must start a new culture. Not on clothing but on living. Look at girls 5-6 year old looking like small pigs. It´s scaring I can tell you. Thanks for your engagement but I stand up for a proper diet and much for a good and healthy way of living including daily exercise. Take care sweet Christy ..

    1. Hello my friend! Great that you are living well and also taking stock of what is around you. I do understand your point about dressing age appropriately.

    1. Thanks, Rose. My words about sex here made a few people uncomfortable but I do think it’s important to at least briefly touch on. I appreciate your words.

  4. You sure know how to inspire! Christy, I enjoyed this post. Oh, how I wish I can confidently say I have someone to share in the inspiration! Since I find it helpful, I believe a reblog might enable someone or two to be inspired!

    1. Hahahaha! Thank you so much for the prayer, Christy I hope she will be truthful, sweet and pure at heart!!👍
