How to stay healthy while pregnant

Pregnancy and health

Congratulations, you’re pregnant! So many wonderful moments are ahead as your family grows. To help you and the baby be the best, here are tips for staying healthy while pregnant.

Every pregnancy is different

Giving birth is nothing if not inspirational. The capacity for life that is unique to women is obviously the means by which the human race continues to survive. It is also an exceptionally stressful process, both physically and psychologically. That is especially true if a woman is pregnant for the first time. It is not surprising since everything is all so new. However much a woman talks to other mothers, whether they are friends or medical professionals, the fact remains that every pregnancy is different and going through it is not in the least bit easy.

So many things change through those nine months that your life will never be the same. Not only will you have a beautiful baby, but you will also have a different perspective on life.

A time to think

It is a time when a lot of people (including men) start to reevaluate what they think is important and how they are going to live their lives in the future.

One example of this, which usually makes itself felt in the 38th or 39th week (which is, of course, towards the end of the third trimester) is the nesting instinct. The desire to prepare the environment into which you bring your child is a completely normal reaction, and it goes back thousands of years in human evolution. There are lots of other things that you may feel when about to give birth of which you need to be aware.

Staying healthy during pregnancy

Here are a few ways of staying as healthy and happy as possible:

The reality, which can be rather frightening, is that pregnancy is dangerous. Pregnancy gingivitis is one example of that.

Since your body will change a lot, you need to know what it all means and how to deal with it. Thankfully, lots of things, while they may be surprising, are nothing to worry about because everyone goes through them.

This is why it is so important to get an Obstetrician. They will spend a lot of their time reassuring you, but they are not just necessary for the birth itself.

They help mothers throughout the entire process of pregnancy. That is, from the first trimester when you may start feeling nauseous and fatigued, to the second trimester when you will start to see a bump developing and you start to feel the movement of your child, right up until the third trimester when it’s likely difficult to sleep.

The birth itself is obviously a massive moment. It is good to have someone there (besides your partner) who knows all about you, both medically and personally.

Making decisions for someone else

The nature of being pregnant is such that for the first time in your life, you will be making decisions that directly affect someone besides yourself. Everyone knows that smoking and drinking are not in the least bit recommended during this time, but you should also eat right so that you can help your baby develop.

Good foods for pregnant women include lean meats, fruits, vegetables, whole-grain bread, and low-fat dairy products. You may also feel cravings (about half of American women do) and they are completely natural too. Developing strong aversions to certain foods is also a normal thing. The best advice is to try to eat healthy food. Too much of a bad thing is still bad, however much you feel you may need it.

This is such a great article. I’m going to share it with my daughter who is 25 weeks pregnant. Yes, I’m going to be grandmother!!!

    1. Ohhhh how exciting, Tricia!! I’m pleased you think this post will be helpful for her. I am thinking of the happy time ahead for your family :)

  2. What a wonderful post, Christy, and so full of information for expectant mothers. However, I don’t plan on personally needing that information again, unless a miracle happens.

    1. Hehe ;) Well, motherhood itself is a miracle so we’ll leave it at that. You’re so sweet to have made time here, M <3

  3. Certainty I don’t know about being pregnant, but I know about healthy food. I wish all mothers to be, the best! I hope the moms get cravings for tomatoes, apples, carrots and whole wheat banana bread with apricots. However, if mom gets that Ice cream and pickles craving, I suggest Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia, with homemade dills! Happy eating!

    1. Great food suggestion, Resa ;) What about a book to read while munching on the ice cream and pickles? ♥

    1. You are so right about it being remarkable. Thanks for taking time here, Linnea!

  4. This is a good reminder for me, a first time mommy-to-be, to take it easy. Cravings are fine and dandy but if I’m already full, I just shouldn’t eat it. Thank you.

    1. Great you find it helpful, Hailey! May your time ahead with your child be amazing!

  5. Well… unless there’s been a bright star in the east, and three kings asking for directions, I don’t need to worry about it.
Seriously though, a valuable post, Christy. Mega hugs!

    1. I see a star shining brightly.. Wait, it’s Teagan :) ♥ Thanks for making time here, Teagan. Hugging back!
