How Wanda Sykes Educates People with Humor

Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes is a well-known American stand-up comedian who has developed a smart way of educating people – by using humor. She is a stand-up comic that pushes limits, and it’s obvious that she has fun on stage doing it.

What Wanda Sykes Talks About

In her live shows, Wanda Sykes speaks a lot about her personal life, recently calling herself a “trifecta of discrimination” to Oprah as she is gay, Black, and a woman in Hollywood. And, issues surrounding those three topics are much of what she discusses in her live comedy sets.

The stand-up comedian isn’t scared of going beyond what some performers will say on stage. She challenges common misconceptions in society, such as what being openly gay in the US is like. Her timing is perfect as she delivers her jokes in her well-recognized sassy style, and there are always underpinnings of truth behind the laugh-out-loud humor.

On stage, she openly talks about her same-sex marriage and the struggles she faces since she came out as gay in 2008. While she doesn’t paint a picture-perfect world, she’s very good at combining smart and funny. It’s hardly surprising that she won an Emmy Award in 1999 for her work writing for The Chris Rock Show.

Why Her Humor Appeals to Audiences

From appearing on TV’s show Ellen regularly to her 2014-2015 tour, Wanda Sykes keeps busy making large audiences both laugh and learn about hot topics. So, why is Wanda Sykes becoming more and more popular with every tour and performance she does?

Surely at least part of her popularity comes from the ability to make people think about what she says. While she delivers her jokes in sarcastic (and even crass) ways, there’s usually a message behind what she’s saying.

Perhaps she’s trying to explain a black stereotype or question why gay marriage is something more people need to support. When fans leave her shows remembering her words then that means she’s educating them.

As well, she’s very confident in her demeanor whenever she’s in an interview or performing on stage. It’s hard not to be drawn to her calm attitude. And, she’s hysterical in her delivery of jokes too.

A Few Last Words

It’s great to see a woman combining intellect with humor to educate the world about current issues. And, it’s even better to see her being embraced by fans!

    1. Ohh I wonder if Wanda has gotten that comparison before? I love when female comedians realize every other word doesn’t have to be a swear word to get laughs from the crowd. :)
